Questions about Magnetic Oil Drain Plugs
 

I was thinking about picking up a magnetic drain plug to catch some of the metal bits floating around the engine and had a few questions.
1) All the ones I see online appear to be aluminum. Does this seem strong enough - especially if you are torquing the bolt down to crush the crush washer?
2) Is the stock plug steel?
3) Are there any downsides to this mod?

I've ran one in my car for about 80'000 kms and no issues. The torque spec is 20 ft/lbs. It's obviously a little larger than the KLX plug but not by much, so the 11 ft/lb spec of for the KLX shouldn't hurt it.

I use one. Tusk brand i believe. It's aluminum and has safety wire holes. I just snug it and then SS safety wire it to the frame.

You can buy a rare earth magnet for a couple bucks and stick it to the existing drain plug. Here's a thread on what I did.

I need one too, OP. I need to safety wire my plug before track season this year and don't have any way to drill the stock one. I see Moose makes one for the KLX300 but I don't know if it will work.

I just don't trust aluminum for something as critical as the oil drain plug.
