Default Pumper Carb

I'm not looking toput a lot of money into my new 2007 KLX300 yet but from going through all of the post I have notice two things I should do..

1 remove the restrictor at the end of the exhaust.

2 buy a pumper curb to get rid of the time delay when I hit the throttle.

Can anyone let me know if I misunderstood what I read and also tell me where I get a pumper curb.

Please excuse my ignorance.... It's been a long time since I got into the dirt bike thing.. but now that my 9 year old is into it I need to start reading and reasearching.

Thanks,

John

Sounds like maybe one of those Vortex throttle pulls might be the ticket if you want some more snap, but don't want to spend $300 to $600 on a pumper carb.

I've ridden with a fellow who has the Mikuni TM36-68 installed on his KLX300R, so at least we know that this carb will work.

I got mine through TriCityCycle:

At the time I bought it, it was on special and I got it at much less price than the current price of $309 Shop around, you might be able to find a deal. Be advised though, you'll probably have to get a collection of jets and/or needles and some patience to get it tuned (or maybe the stock jets are perfect for your displacement/altitude/exhaust/intake ).

Yep, the Vortex will definitely give you some more snap!

first off all thanks for the fast post... this site is amazing... The Vortex throttle just limits the amout of twist you have to do to reach full throttle, thus a fast response time. I'm not sure that will work or not, I think my lag may be the fuel is not available as fast, you right I would rather spend $50 on the throttle if that took the lag away. Where do you get the pumper carbs from if I decide to go that way.

I also like the short throw single cable throttle and it works well with a pumper carb. The short throttle helps the feel of the KLXbecause thestock throttle just seems to turn forever. The throttle will not get rid of the lag or delay inherent in the stock CVK carb but makes itfeel better. You will need a pumper for that. Next to suspension it has to be about the best mod you can do to the KLX. It is expensive but itwill put a big smile on your face once dialed in. My experience is with an FCR35 from Jerry at Four Stroke Works. He sets it up ready to bolt onwith the correct bells and jetted pretty close. It is the most expensive of the pumpers at about $600.00. The other options I have seen and read about are the Mikuni pumpers, TM33, TM36 and a 33 bored out buy a fellow on the forum, Bill Blue. I have heard good things about the Bill Blue carbs as he also sets them up ready to bolt on. You will need to jet. It seems the Mikuni's go for about $300-450.00? I personally like the Kehin FCR as a first choice and it's also whats basically on most other dirt bikes. I would take any of the pumpers over the CVK, especiallyif riding off road. I'm very partial to the pumper carb on the KLX and feelif you have not tried one you don't know what your missing.

Yet another vote for the throttle. For $30 see if it scratches your itch. If it doesn't light your fire can always go to the carb.
I have the Vortex & DJ kit & I cant make my bike bog/lag/whatever you want top call it.[sm=gears.gif]

Yes, the throttle is worth having whether you stay with the CVK or get a pumper. Bog is probablynot what I would say. Any type of carb will bog if not jetted properly. A pumper is more difficult to get dialed in compared to the CVK which is pretty easy and good for more altitude range.A couple of it's advantages. There is some delay or what I call lag in the CVK. It is there and you mostly notice it in technical off road conditions.A well jetted pumper carb has almost instantaneous throttle response that the CVK will never have on it's best day. The CVK has some advantages, but for dirt it's a big difference from a pumper. A pumper is expensive but IMO transforms the bike for the better.

I would say that if you're not looking to spend major $$, the Vortex throttle is your best bet. If you decide to go with a pumper down the road, it will work well with the Vortex throttle, so no big deal.

I loved the difference my pumper made with the 250cc jug,but IREALLY likeit it now thatI've bumped thedisplacementup to 300cc (accel pump+the additional torque= so much fun it should be illegal!).If you will be staying with250cc for awhile than I'dsay the Vortex will give you the best'bang for the buck.'You practicallyget carpal tunnelsyndrom trying to gettoWOT with the stock throttle, so thatVortex hasgot to help in major way.

If you want to get a pumper on the cheap (around $300.00), then you will be playing with it to get it to fit and get the jetting dialed-in. If you buy one pretty muchset-up to fit with a good baseline jetting you're lookingaround $600.00, unless you find akiller deal on a TM33 and send it to Bill Blue for mods.
