Please help with clarifying modifications for a newby!
Hey, I have had a KLX for almost 2 years now and have just started upgrading things. I bought a Two Bros. exaust and im just curious about a few things. What size Jets, Main and Pilot? I bought my bike in Oregon so do i have the N1TC needle? And finally whats the slide drill mod? Directions for these, and a description of the slide drill would be awsome!
Thanks in advance!
Thanks in advance!
I had a 07- so I picked up a jet kit that included the slide mod. drill.
The 07 had a cv carb. This means the motor vacuum is what opens the slide. By drilling the hole slightly larger, the carb will open faster. This gives better throttle response.
This was a big help- but in the end I put a pumper carb on.

You've had your bike for almost 2 years now and you just now found us? Wow! Well first of all welcome to the forums, post up a blurb in the new members area and shoot us a picture of where you ride.
well i never really had any money to do anything, but i saved up some money and bought my pipe. and if im getting this right the slide mod is a purchased item? or is it just taking a drill to something to open the bike up? and does the N1TC come with jets? or is that a totally seperate can of worms?
N1TC is the slide needle that comes stock on a KLX 300 bike.. it's actually 3 pieces. and I'm not aware of it being stock on any KLX 250 bike. For all mod questions, See this linky... https://www.kawasakiforums.com/forum...ead.php?t=8886 That thread is all the mods in a day by dirtsurfer, great photo references and answers to your questions.
My 07 did not come with the NITC. Easy way to tell is to open the top of the carb and look at the needle. If it has grooves, a clip, a little spacer washer sitting on top of the clip, that's the NITC, if it's a solid piece of metal with what looks like a thick nail head at the top with no grooves... that's the stock krappy one.
Either way changing it will help some.
As for slide mod... there's 2 versions, one is a lighter weight spring on top of the slide (the version that can come with a kit) the other (my preference) is the drill method. There's a small hole in the slide (right next to the one the needle comes out of) and by tapping that out slightly, air transfers easy = faster movement.
As for jetting, post the altitude you live and ride at and your specific location. Then probably someone close by with a similar set-up can give you a starting point. Also specify which jets you plan on buying as jets from Kawi are different than DJ, are different than Keihin, etc. Also note if you're doing just a slip on muffler, or full header and exhaust, and whether or not you're doing airbox mods (typically either by removing the lid, the snorkle, or by changing the snorkle out to a different one.
The mod day thread has most everything you need besides maybe jetting ideas for your specific altitude and set-up.
As to pumpers, the most direct fit replacement is the one done by Bill Blue who also does the 351 big bore kit. However, I personally like the CV because it's smooth on power and will handle bigger altitude shifts and still run right. The pumpers are more temper-mental and IMO dont give you that much more bang for buck, I wont look at a pumper until I go big bore and maybe not even then. I like a lot of flexibility and good mileage, both of those go to the CV carb.
Welcome to the forum, have fun with your mod-projects!

Ok so im thinking a 42 pilot and a 128 main?
As for where I ride it covers alot of altitude. I live in portland at around 200 ft and do much of my riding around town, but when I go out riding off-road i can climb anywhere from 1,000 ft to around 4,500 ft because I dont ride in one specific area, some western forests (Wetter) and some in eastern oregon (Dryer) and i would rather not have to adjust everything every time I wanna ride a different area.
Thanks for all the help!
