oil "screen"...
I've been told there is a metal screen to clean/replace that the oil goes through.
I looked up the oil change threads here, no mention of it.
The owner's manual doesn't mention it.
A local kawa dealer said there is one, and he'll show me on a parts screen later today when I get there to pick up oil filters (although he doesn't have any replacement screens, and he doesn't know if it can just be cleaned instead of replaced).
Any input here?

You might be referring to stainless steel oil filters. Apparently you can clean them and reuse them unlike the normal paper oil filters. I've never used one myself, but I've heard they don't filter down to the size that paper filters can get. I have no plans to get one - the normal paper filters aren't that expensive.
Okay, at the Kawa dealer today, I saw the parts diagram page showing the oil pump, filter. It showed an oil strainer screen, but it wasn't clear exactly where it was (it wasn't connected to the other parts, it was floating in space next to them). So, I get home and visit the kawa website parts diagram here: http://www.kawasaki.com/Default.asp?...arketingId=123
Go to "parts diagrams", then for our bike (I have the 49 state version, not the California version), then view the "oil pump" parts diagram. You can see the filter, parts to the oil pump, etc. At the bottom, again floating in space, you see a round "oil strainer" at the bottom. Now, that is different from the diagram I saw at the dealer, which was a flat oil strainer. But regardless, it shows an oil strainer. It was a $13 part, and he said he'd have to order it if I wanted it.
My bmw F650 had an oil strainer that the maint. schedule said needed to be replaced (or cleaned, I forget which) at the 600 mi. service, i.e. the "post-break-in". Then it isn't in the maint. anymore. I.e., it is really there to catch big metal chunks that break loose only during break-in.
A friend is the bmw dealer service manager, and dirt bike racer too. He saw my new klx the other day and told me it will have a metal oil strainer to clean when I do the first oil change(s).
So, compiling all the evidence I have here, there is a metal oil strainer on the bike somewhere no doubt, I will try to find it and clean it during the first few oil changes. If I feel it should be replaced when I inspect it, I'll order one.
I'll let you all know what I end up with.
Welcome me the newbie!

that link is wrong, its not for our bike, go back and look at the klx250s it wont ask to choose 49 state legal or just cali.. anyway, once you do that go to oil pump, look at part #49065 thats whats in our bike, i have seen it in my service manual, its on the bottom of the engine, there is a schematic in the service manual that shows where it is... not sure about replacing it, but thats what i know...
oh sheit, that is the wrong link, no wonder the schematic didn't quite match. To get the right schematic, the above link will take you to KLR250, but hit the "dual purpose bikes" link above the klr pic and then select klx250, then "parts diagrams", then "oil pump". There is the flatish metal screen "oil filter" part# 49065 (same one I saw in the dealer's shop today).
Okay, regardless, I think that thing needs cleaning. I'll find it at some point and let everyone know what I find.

That oil screen is in the right center engine case. To get to it you have to remove the right engine case. That means, drain the oil, drain the antifreeze, and maybe removing the clutch. This is not a normal maintenance cleaning or replacement idem, it is usually checked went taking the lower end of the engine apart.

Someone told me the same thing on the Screen Issue, that it needs to be replaced at the first oil change. Sounds to me like your talking about the Oil pickup screen. most motors have them and are used to screen the oil Before it get into the pump. If you have to open the case to get at it I'm 99% sure its the oil pickup screen. I will be doing my 1st oil change on the bike in the near future myself.
