Odometer

Has anyone turned back there odometer ? I'm going to try soon but somebody must have already done it. It can't be that hard.

I don't personally care what people do to the odometer of a dual sport bike like the KLX and others, but be aware that many states actually make it illegal to tamper with any odo on any vehicle manufactured for street use. Hey...I'm not an odo nazi, so don't take that wrong. Now...I would get pissed to find that some sleazy used car guy had turned back the odo on a vehicle that I bought just to jack up the price.

I recently noticed that the Vapor unit that the previous owner installed on my KLX doesn't indicate any method of erasing the main odo number. I haven't done any heavy research to see if it can be done, so I'm not saying it can't. It even sat without an internal battery, off the bike, on my work bench for 2 or 3 weeks while I was doing some front end work, and the odo number stayed saved.

I only mention the legal issue because some states really get their shorts in a wad about mileage tampering when you go to sell, register, or buy a used vehicle. My state, Texas, isn't as tough as some states about this issue, but the clerk at the DMV was still going to make me get some kind of sworn affidavit from the previous owner, because my bike now had a different odo and the overall mileage wan't really known. Apparently a lot of used car sales abuse has occured with the mileage issue, and the DMV people don't make much of a discernment between something like a 2007 Cadillac and a 2006 KLX250.:D

Remind me to never buy anything from you.

It can be done. But requires pactience and some finger skills to take apart the drum to reset the odometer. Just don't be selling the KLX after the odo mod.

punkenduro09 04-09-2010 07:07 PM

my question is why?

Beardoge 04-09-2010 08:18 PM

Sorry it is a 07 with the mechanical gauges. So learjet it is possible then it's not sealed ?

The only reason I can think of to roll back the odom is to make a little more money on a resell. Dont do it! How would you like to buy something and wonder if you were lied to?

redpillar 04-09-2010 08:32 PM

why don't you just disconnect it. You can tell when a mechanical odometer has been played with because the numbers will not line up properly.

What are the chances of this thread becoming a sticky?

Sounds like it's par for the course.

""So I was leaving horseshoes last night on my bike. I was so drunk I thought I was stuck so apparently I was holding it wide open in neutral for about 30 seconds before somebody put it in gear for me. They said it was running real bad and missing so I check for damages this morning hoping it wasn't running 11 grand that whole time and lo and behold when you hold it wide open it runs up to the rev limiter and then falls back to about 5 grand then stays there. LOL who'd thunk.""
