noob question, lean and rich

Hi Guys,

I am about to rejet my carb with the dynojet kit next week, just trying to do some research, the thing i don't understand is how do you tell that the bike is running rich or lean, I mean, what are the symptoms if it is lean or rich, hope someone can explain??

Cheers
Chris.

Unfortunately, I think the best way is to "read the plug" which is not that easy because you have to remove the plug.
By reading the condition of the insulator core and the electrode, you can get a good idea of the combustion conditions.

You can also get some indication by riding it and by the sounds (i.e. popping), but that's very subjective.
Popping can be caused by both lean OR rich conditions.

If its too lean you will feel it starve for gas at higher speed. The exhaust will also get hotter. If its rich it may stumble and possibly smoke a little but it won't be running properly. I put the KLX300 complete exhaust on and removed the airbox and followed the instructions. I used the 128 main jet as the kit is for a 300 and we have a 250. It worked perfect. Don't forget the spacers on top of the needle. Any questions ask *before* you put the carb back in :) Better too rich than too lean...

Thanks Guys,

So does that mean if it is lean, it is not getting enough air/fuel and if it is rich it is getting to much.
Man thanks for the super quick replies to.

Cheers
Chris.

If its lean its getting either too much air and not enough fuel. If its rich its getting too much fuel or not enough air. The exhaust can also affect this. If its restricted it will not allow the flow it needs to get enough air etc. Usually you do the exhaust when jetting along with opening up the airbox so the whole system breathes better. ;)
