Talking A newbies 1st ride

So I walked away from street bikes 14 years ago after losing 2 riding buddies in 6 months. The itch to get a bike has always been there, but it was just an itch. Last summer I picked up a PW80 for the boys and fell into a KX125 this year that I ended up trading for a CRF125F. Picked up an old Kendon trailer and then it dawned on me that I would just be a spectator while my boys are out having all the fun. A few weeks ago I picked up a 09 KLX250S so that I could properly supervise the boys. It's bone stock and had 1049 miles on the ODO. I rode it to work once last week and this weekend we went out to Ocotillo Wells for the day. I've never ridden in the dirt and my 14yo son has never ridden a bike with a clutch, so it was bound to be fun. While unloading the trailer, one of the bikes got dropped. Guess which one? Took out the trailer light too. After that the three of us had a blast. A torn seat, scratched plastic, a missing reflector, and lots of good memories. The bike did everything I wanted it to do which was to just keep up with the PW80. Street bike skills helped me a bit, but it was obvious that I had some learning to do. Good times. It's hard to belive that I've only put 149 miles on since I got it. We're already planning our next trip. Ok, enough words. Here's some pics.

Congrats on the new ride. You will love that bike more and more everytime you ride it. Its one of those purchases that we all shouldve done along time ago.

First time in the dirt, sand can be a challenge, especially with those stock tires. I tend to lean back (sit back further on the seat) and stick it in one gear higher then normal for sand. Congrats and have fun.

Congrads on the KLX. Riding with the kids is great. KLX 250 and a PW 80, good match same power to weight ratio.

Thanks guys. I've never been in the dirt with a bike, so I have no idea how the bike did. I have nothing to compare it to. I do know that I'm a better rider than my kids are. The KLX did fine at the pace we were going. The 10yo on the PW80 was pushing us to go faster. We spent most of the day riding in circles around our camp. Once the 14yo felt confident with the clutch and could prove to me he could "ride", we went for a little run. I am pretty impressed how fast he picked it up. Only 11 miles in two hours, but they were loving it. So was I. My 10yo swears he was doing 50 mph. I had the GPS on my bike and I only hit 35, but on a PW in soft sand I would guess it felt like 110. That kid is gonna be trouble.
