New Handlebar thread
Sorry for posting yet another handlebar thread. I have a bunch of questions
I am looking at the Pro Taper SE High bars
1) I remember reading that the stock cables would fit with these bars, anyone experience otherwise? (Ive got a 2009 KLX250)
2) Does the pad(That says PROTAPER) on the crossbar come off? It seems like it would get in the way a lot, especially if you want to mount things on the crossbar. I dont care much for the bulky look either.
3) Can anyone recommend some grips to go with this?
4) When switching the bars, is there anything I should be aware of? Will I need to do any kind of modification or is it straight bolt on kind of job?
5) Before I go ahead and order this, is there any other handlebars that you just think I have to look at?
Thanks!

1. Some people don't have to get longer cables, others do need new cables. There seems to be some production line variations in the cables. Sometimes a reroute helps.
2. Usually just velcroed on.

4. Cut the locator nubs off the control pods. Don't drill holes in the new bar. Wrap cloth around the bar to give the pods some grip.

1. Guessing you mean Atv Hi bars, I needed a longer clutch cable (klx300)
2. You have to remove the crossbar to remove the pad or cut it off.
3. Progrips 714 imo but anything works
4. The nub is plastic and can be removed w/ a file or rotary tool. Everything else is straight forward.
5. I like the PT Atv Hi bars on mine.

Using the Windham MX/RM Mid Bend, everything fits. Same bend as a renthal 971, or ricky carmichal, RC, fwiw.
The bar pad on the SE (seven eights) is solid not split. It can get in the way sometimes tuning clickers or bleeders. It is however more solid foam and you can zip tie to it, I zip tie my gps cradle right on it. Gave up on ball mounts.

CR high bend will fit just dandy, I suggest using the MX pillow top grips as well in unison. Heads up tho, might have to cut your throttle tube down a touch to accommodate the MX grips. If you want to save yourself any doubt, order a longer (braided) brake line and the KLX300 throttle cable ahead of time, you can't go wrong*
*wish I had done this :P
p.s. The foam pad is not removable from factory on my bars, although one could easily cut it and then re attach it using the nature of the foam and the Pro Taper cover that comes with it

I put the Pro Taper SE CR High bars on my 06 klx. I did it all as one upgrade when I added the HDB hand guards. I'm probably going to swap out the throttle tube eventually as well as the stock klx one is too short to put a grip on it with the end cut out of it. It needs about another 1/4 of an inch. Other than that I'm happy with the results.
The bar was not pre-tapped. The inside diameter on the SE pro taper aluminum bars is the correct size to tap the bars for the HDB hand guard insert though. HDB sends a 5/8 -11 tap for the inserts. They also supply a threaded guide that you put on the ends of the bars to help start and guide the tap straight. If you are unable to do it yourself I believe they offer the service of tapping your bars if you send them in, Fred.
