motocross fender and supermotard fender

Installed new fenders. Had to modify the subframe to makethe rearfit properly. Subframe cross section was to tall and angle down at the end. Also added a Baja Designs led taillight. I haven't put the turn signals on yet though. There is a wire hanging down in the pic. I'll tidy the wires up once the turn signals are on tonight.

Looks good, Wes! I did the same rear fender mod this weekend too. I didn't cut my subframe off. Couldn't bring myself to cut it just yet. Your plate mount looks a lot cleaner than my sheet metal fab. I'll post some pics when I get home from work tonight. Can you take a picture more from the rear of the bike too?
What are you using for tag lights?

Thunderchild 01-23-2007 08:44 PM

I went back and looked at your picture again... What tail light are you using?

Nice job, vurtle. Like Thunderchild I just couldn't bring myself to cut off my sub-frame just yet. I may just see if I can bend it up to match the MX fender profile. And I really like that Baja tail light. Can you post another pic of it from a more rearward angle? Please be sure and post how you do your turn signals.

I started to go that route, but that light isnt DOT approved is it?

I ordered the acerbis sunday

bike looks great

RE: motocross fender and supermotard fender

Baja Designs claims it to be DOT legal. It is the one they use for their dual sport kits. It is also a plate illuminator.

JB1 01-23-2007 09:14 PM

RE: motocross fender and supermotard fender

Hmm, I just looked at their website and it didnt say DOT approved or not. I personally dont see why it wouldnt be DOT approved though.

vurtle 01-23-2007 09:24 PM

RE: motocross fender and supermotard fender

Yea, I just looked on their website too and couldn't find it. Not sure why I thought they said it, but if their kits are legal, they have to be.

RE: motocross fender and supermotard fender

It sure looks good, you did a nice job.
Take a pic with the brake on or lights on and post it...I bet those LED's are bright.

btw....The picture showing the bike outside looks just like the crappy weather we are having here in Houston

JB1,
I use to live in Spring when I went to school at UTI. It's been raining a lot up here. I haven't seen this much rain since I lived down there. We don't have any steam though when it rains in the summer time here. My cousin lives in the Cypress area, so I spent a lot of time near your location.

FWIW, depending on what Acerbis light you get, it wont be DOT legal. I used the Dual Sport model for awhile and it's not DOT approved.

Looks awesome!

I'll have to look into that taillight, how much did it cost?

What's the deal on the muffler? Looks like a reworked factory one off the 300 maybe? Anyway, looks really good the way you hide it behind the panel and the how the angle of it matches the lines of the bike! That's one thing I don't like about my Muzzy, doesn't flow with the lines of the bike or something, sticks out like a sore thumb.

vurtle 01-23-2007 11:08 PM

RE: motocross fender and supermotard fender

Taillight is about $60. I cut the stock exhaust down about 7" and made a tip from some scrap mandrel tubing from another project.

Thanks to everyone for all the comments.

That looks good! So what are the part numbers for the fenders and lights for us that are unsure... are they Maier KLX300 plastic or KLX250R plastics. They look real clean but the green looks a little off, is it? I wonder what black looks like, I might have to do some photoshopping and see.

vurtle 01-23-2007 11:31 PM

RE: motocross fender and supermotard fender

Maier motocross rear fender for the KLX 300 and the front fender is an Acerbis universal supermotard fender. It's probably just the camera making the colors lookoff. They both match pretty well to the factory plastics.

I like my home made tail light bracket but I've always considered it temporary until I found something better. And the Baja Designs LED tail light is it - thanks! I just ordered one.

Yep, that's the one that I have/had too. It's not DOT approved. I didn't have any problems with the law over it though and I doubt you will either.

Well why would they advertise it as DOT approved if its not?

markturbo 01-24-2007 02:26 PM

RE: motocross fender and supermotard fender

Why are you guys so worried if it's DOT, if it lights up and works as a brake light then I don't think you have to worry about the law pulling you over because it works.

JB1 01-24-2007 05:12 PM

RE: motocross fender and supermotard fender

Im more concerned about passing inspection.

I still wanna know why its not DOT approved

DOT approved tail lights, on motorcycles/ cars have to have a red reflector on it... does it have a red reflector? The acerbis tail light does.... i think thats what you guys are missin;)

yea the mechanic said that my rear signals were not legal. but passed it anyway... nice guy...:D

Thunderchild 01-24-2007 06:41 PM

RE: motocross fender and supermotard fender

It's not DOT approved because they prob. didn't submit it for approval. Bottom line is that if the letters DOT are not molded into the lens, it's not DOT approved.

Sorry Wes for hijacking your thread. I'll post some pictures of my fender mod to get it back on track.

Here's a picture of mine with the same fenders in black, and re-using the stock tailight and a homemade license plate mount. I did cut the subframe some but not as much as you, this setup will do me for now until it gets warmer out and I can work on it more without freezing my but off.

Ok, here's mine. I didn't cut the subframe off like Vurtles and Markturbo did. Just can't bring myself to cut it yet.

I used sheetmetal to make a plate to mount the stock light on and bent the plate down to make a place to mount the tag. I don't think the pictures show it, but I used two small. metal brackets to brace the sheetmetal where the bend takes place. I used rivets to hold the brackets/braces.

The tag lights are 14V, 1W panel indicator lights from the electronics junk drawer. They're held on with just a tie-wrap right now. I'm still deciding on how I'm going to mount them.

Since we're sharing, here's mine - no subframe cutting, mounts made with aluminum U- and L-brackets I made. License plate light is a white LED:

All this will soon be replaced by that cool Baja Designs tail light. The only think left will be to figure out something for the turn signals.

RE: motocross fender and supermotard fender

These are the turn signals I bought for my bike. They mount on the side of the baja designs license bracket. My wife went out of town for the week and took the camera, so I can't take anymore pictures until she gets back. The LED taillight looks pretty sweet at night. It gives off a blue-white light all the way around the lens and the main LEDs are red.

Here is the Texas DOT rules for inspection. I believe our bike falls under the motor-driven cycle (250cc or less) and has less requirements than I listed here. Here is the link to the same guidelines an inspector uses when he looks at your vehicles. It mentions emmissions in it too.

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/msb/txm...tm#Chapter%202

STOPLAMPS REQUIRED
* * * * *
(c) A stoplamp shall be mounted on the rear of the vehicle.
(d) A stoplamp shall emit a red or amber light, or a color between red and amber, that is:
(1) visible in normal sunlight at a distance of at least 300 feet from the rear of the vehicle; and
(2) displayed when the vehicle service brake is applied.
(f) A stoplamp may be included as a part of another rear lamp.

TURN SIGNAL LAMPS REQUIRED.
(a)Exceptas provided by Subsection (b), a motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, or pole trailer shall be equipped with electric turn signal lamps that indicate the operator's intent to turn by displaying flashing lights to the front and rear of a vehicle or combination of vehicles and on that side of the vehicle or combination toward which the turn is to be made.
* * * * *
(c) Turn signal lamps:
(1) shall be mounted at the same level and spaced as widely apart as practicable on the front and on the rear of the vehicle; and
(2) may be included as a part of another lamp on the vehicle.
(d) A turn signal lamp shall emit:
(1) a white or amber light, or a color between white and amber, if the lamp is mounted on the front of the vehicle; or
(2) a red or amber light, or a color between red and amber, if the lamp is mounted on the rear of the vehicle.
(e) A turn signal lamp must be visible in normal sunlight at a distance of:
(1) at least 500 feet from the front and rear of the vehicle if the vehicle is at least 80 inches wide; and
(2) at least 300 feet from the front and rear of the vehicle if the vehicle is less than 80 inches wide.
