Moab, UT Ride Report May 6-8
A few riding buddies and I went to Moab, Utah for a few days riding. We had my KLX250S, a KLX300, and a couple XR250 Hondas. Camp was set up in the primitive (free) area of Kane Canyon.
A few campsites can be seen in this photo. Ours wasn't here, but nearby.

We rode the Kane Creek area Friday afternoon. Too busy having fun and riding to get anymore pics.
Here's a view from our campsite taken early in the morning, as the sun was rising. It was already warm enough to wear shorts and a t-shirt. A hot day is surely ahead.

We met up with TNC to ride Fins & Things (see his ride report here).
Then we did the Slickrock Bike Trail during the hot afternoon when there weren't too many mountain bikers to disturb. Sorry, no photos of either of these. But here are some of Hell's Revenge, where we went next.

Some idiot (me) got stuck in a bathtub. The quads made it look so easy, but it was a lot slicker than most of the other trails...lots of rubber layered on the rock.

But, I got out (fast-forward to about 1:25 in this vid):

So, a couple of us run to town for some water and back into Hell's Revenge we go. Up and over a steep hill and we see this Crown Vic way down the hill in front of us, at an overlook with a Hummer full of tourists.

One of my buddies says "hey! I saw that guy on youtube."
Who needs a jeep when you have a Crown Vic?

Here's another shot of Hell's Revenge...one of us topping a very steep climb.

On our final day, we again meet up with TNC. What a nice guy! We really appreciated his company and showing us around. And based on his descriptions, we'll be trying some new things next go around at Moab.
We go ride Pritchett Canyon where we get a great overlook of Kane Creek Canyon.

TNC takes us to our end of the road on the Pritchett trail

We find some shade and eat lunch

From Behind The Rocks

It's been a long day. We have dinner and send one of our group off to bed, and the remaining three go on a midnight ride.

The X2 headlight performed great. So much more illumination than the XR's stock headlight. Wish I had a stock KLX there to compare it to. I want to put it on a relay or three-way switch so that I can run either light off, low beam, high beam, or both beams together.
The next morning, the wind is whipping hard. I almost lose my tent, and we have to chase down a bunch of other stuff. The dust is blowing. Then it starts to rain, then pour. Should have had a picture of that mess but we were working so hard and fast to get stuff packed no one thought of it.
We did get snow on the way home...

Nice report. Really enjoyed it. It's great you could hook up with another member (TNC.) I recon' a trials tyre on the rear would be a good bet, with that much rock around.
WOW! Looks like a great trip, with some great places to ride. Sure makes me jealous.
HUH?????.............................
Did you guys go over this spot? Looks pretty tough.
Great report, thanks for posting it up.

Oh man, Scott...no kidding about the weather that last morning. Fortunately I had everything loaded ready to just crank up the van and trailer and just drive away. The rain was coming down in town almost sideways. Even though I went south while you guys went north, I also hit snow near Monticelllo about 50 miles south of Moab. The rest of the day was mostly a dust storm until just before I got to my destination down near Socorro, NM. The dust stopped, and I headed up into the mountains for camp. I rode the area the next two days, and there was some great riding there with lots of mountains and canyons. Made it home on Thursday. It was great meeting and riding with you guys.
Nah. Photos just don't do justice. It was rough with lines having a big steep bump at the bottom or the top - take your pick - and lots of smaller ones in between.
We checked it out and picked our line to come up if we had been on the bottom needing to get out. But it was late in the day and after a couple days of hard riding, for some strange reason not a one of us were willing to be the first to try their chances at napping here.

Here's a few more photos to add to the report. The first is one of the climbs on Hells Revenge. The trail is darkened from tires.

Met this guy while there. I think he rides a KLX too
.

Checking out a closed trail.

While on Fins and Things, we noticed a couple riding some interesting home-built units. Almost like mountain bikes with motors. Perhaps a little underpowered, but very light and nimble.

Another shot while riding Pritchett.

And a little of the carnage inflicted to my bike...
I have NO idea where this happened. Just glad it wasn't a big enough hit to bust through!

After a get off, I noticed shifting was very difficult and had to bend the shifter back. I've seen several like this before. Maybe even one from Dan
.

The crash in the tub was a big hit on the front end. It busted the ball off of the RAM mount holding the GPS and slammed the X2 headlight and Vapor on the rock. I was sure the Vapor was going to be crunched bad and the GPS dead. But, the GPS still works fine (it had some glitches on downloading data, but after a reload of the firmware, it works fine except for a scratch on the screen and several not on the screen - them Garmins are darn tuff). The hit to the Vapor was so hard it bent the aluminum diamond plate used as a mount back about 1/4 inch. You can maybe see the scuffing on the X2 headlight and top of the Vapor. Waahhh! Now that cool graphic doesn't look so good.
