Lowered KLX
Hey Guys its finaly just like I want it. I have done all the Mods and it runs great.
I also put a 510x18 Kenda K270 on the rear for that big bike look and a 300x21 Front Kenda K270.... I had a 325x21 on it but didn't like the look or the ride it must of been a bad tire it had a small hop at speed on highways .
I installed the Kouba Link in the rear and set the race sag to 3.75" Kouba said for lowering purposes set it to 3.90" or 3.25" for raceing so I just put it a little stiffer . I just wanted it lowered I have a 29" inseam and I felt bery unstable at times ,maybe 20 years ago it would of been fine but I'm 46 now and not as balanced as I used to be[
]
I also tried some 1" bar risers that No Brakes told me about and that let me slide the forks up 3/4" of and inch. Kouba suggested this exact setup to keep the geometry the same as it was. The bike still has plenty of clearance and travel. Way more than my friends Yam XT225 . So now I can touch the ground very well
The last thing I might do this winter is gearing not sure yet. Soon as I go the bike like I want ti winter hits [:@]Oh well spring will come soon enough....

thanks ,,,, yes I might do a 45t on the rear I still want to be able to run 65mph and not cream the engine. 45 will be the same as 13 but a little easier on the chain and not as much noise. If I rode in trails only I would do 13 t but I don't have any trails near me so I do almost all highway and country roads. Might get one of those cool looking gold link chains
i think when it says im going 65 its about 6500 rpm... kinda weird... so its not too bad, but i think the speedo is like 7 mph off... so i usually run like 70,

Bear,
I am thinking about doing exactly this same mod. As such, I have a couple of questions for you:
1. Where did you get your handlebar risers. I have seen them from a guy on Ebay (bierno or something like that) for about $35 plus $4 shipping. I was hoping to do a little better than that.
2. I have a 30" inseam & weigh about 230#. I don't expect you to recommend the Kouba size for me, but what can you tell me about the KLX4 that you got? Do you completely flatfoot with bend in your legs? If so, then I am thinking that the KLX4 will be a little too much lowering for me. I am leaning to the KLX3, but I will hate to buy the link & still not be able to comfortably flatfoot. I also dont' want it to end up being too short. I had a Yamaha XT225 for 2 days and traded it in mainly because it was too short.
3. According to the Kouba site, you should be able to move the forks up about 0.5" without handlebar risers, and then another 3/4" if you have the risers. I thought I saw somewhere that you (or someone) said that you can not move them up but about 3/4" overall because there is a taper to the fork tube. It seems like 3/4" is about the sweet spot to raise them anyway, so I guess the point is moot. I am just wondering if the taper in the bar will serve as a good guide to make sure that each bar is raised to the same point. Did you use this as your guide, or did you measure?
Thanks for the input. I think you just pushed me over the edge on this mod.
Thanks,
Chris

Yep that is who I got the risers from great guy . And yes there is a taper on the forks so 3/4" is about all you want to move the forks.
I weigh about 172 and with the KLX4 set at 3.75 race sag I cannot touch the ground flatfooted real close to it though. But at a stop I can put one foot down flatfooted and I like that.
Before I did the lowering I was tip toed and that was not good on a none level surface. Kouba was great to deal with he even shipped the links the day I ordered them before I even sent payment... He is a trusting guy. Even with my full weight on the bike there is almost 8" of space from the rear tire till it hits the fender so for road riding which I mostly do I will never bottom out. Maybe the KLX3 would be good for you as you weigh more than I do. It was a chance I took but it worked out great for me. And I have neck problems so moving the bars up and tilting back a bit makes the ride better for me.
Hope this helps....
