I have got a set of Orteib Bags and was also wondering how you would keep them from getting exhaust burns.
The same questions goes for the aerostich standard size tank pannier.
Has anyone mounted these products?

KLX is fine for long distances, did a lap of New Zealand at the start of this year.

As for petrol, you'd want to be carrying enough for 300 or so kms? If you can get a 10 litre can, that would take care of it.

Watch out with that 15t sprocket. I did it, and 2 months later got rid of it. Saps a lot of power down lower, for relatively small gains higher. And when you're on the highway with the 15t, you have to change down a gear at any slight rise you come to.

I say Kawasaki got it right at the 14 for all round use.

Luggage will be the bitch. I highly recommend ditching the tent and going with a bivvy bag. Store it with your sleeping bag.

I have the same gas problem for my 09. I picked up a Rotopax 2 gallon tank to mount on the rear rack. It is only 3 inches high laying on the rack, then pile your bags on top of it. Comes with a neat centre hold down. I use it for extended bush travel. You can also get a holder to put the tank on edge behind your luggage. This may be better for tripping. Rotopax.com

durden, im actually going to order that rack for my next ride. the duffle set up lasted 30 miles after that, then a strap got caught and snapped the tail light and plate off. the front paners i use are tusk atv tank panners found on rocky mountain mc, i think 10 bucks, hold a good amound. the one thing i dont like is they would kinda be in the way when offroad and are only velcrowed in place. on the last trip i zip tied them to the tank and didnt have a problem.

I'm glad to see this thread. I'm keen on the idea of a KLX351 for long trips to the trails.

I just made a long trip with my '09!
From Sicily to Northen Greece and Greek islands. I did 2960 km (1671 miles) with no rear rack and no bigger tank, the only mod I had was a more comfortable gel seat!

Somewhere in Skiathos island:

Here is the luggage, just some soft bags fixed as best as i can:

And here is the gel seat made by Granucci, an italian specialized firm, made with customized design. It cost me 160€ (228$) and now riding is a way lot better!

Sorry for my bad english.
Maybe i will post a report soon!

Can you post up a few pics of it mounted? I've been looking at these but wasn't sure if they would hang over the edge of the rack too far or not.

http://www.rotopax.com/gasoline-roto...-fuel-c-1.html

I have been looking at those Rotopax but was kind of concerned about putting 2 gallons of gas on the back of the bike plus luggage.
