After almost 4k miles I've developed some real range anxiety, and drained the reserve about a mile from a gas station yesterday.
I really don't want to drop $400 to get an extra 0.7 gallons with the IMS option. It looks like there's a 3.8 for the 300 now, but after watching a few videos it appears to just be for the FI models?
My understanding is that the Acerbis 3.7 gallon tank for the 90's KLX 250/300 will fit on a carbureted KLX250 with minor modifications. I believe one the of the issues is that you need to mod the choke as the fuel petcock interferes with it. I'm pretty sure I've seen a thread on this forum on the subject.
I use the Acerbis on my '12. It also replaces the radiator shrouds and comes with additional braces so that it provides some crash protection.
I have the pumper carb on mine, but it's quite easy to use it with the CV.
Here are the installation instructions for reference. https://www.acerbisusa.com/2008-kawa...01-color-black
Here’s a pic of a 09 klx with the Acerbis tank installed. Iirc the bike is owned by a member on here, and it’s not all that difficult to install. Theres a post explaining it on here somewhere.
I saw pics of the newest 3.8 gal IMS tank on a FI klx that’s pre ‘24. Wonder if an aluminum block off plate could be made to run that 3.8 gal tank on a carb klx, I’d like to see the bottom of one of the newest tank. The radiator shrouds don’t line up perfectly, but it bolts on. The ‘24-5 klx rad shrouds go for $213+
I'm using the Clarke for my 2014. Yes, far too expensive IMHO. In doing so I also removed the smog equipment and now when the bike is on its side, no more fuel leaks. That's the best larger fuel tank upgrade feature!
I'm not sure which one would work with my 2012 250? The first one looks like it would allow me to keep the shrouds, but I'm betting the big, dorky second one is the one that fits...

Hello, can you elaborate further about the fuel leak when the bike is on it's side? I noticed the last time I dropped the bike that it piddled some gas onto the ground. How does the smog equipment cause this, some kind of evaporative valve, or something? Also, what kind of oversize tank are you using?
Thanks,
Will
