lacing 17s to stock hubs
 

I have been looking online about this question and have found mixed opinions, I have looked at the part numbers for the hubs of an SF and an S, and they are the same. So what exactly is the problem with doing it?

I found a set of 17 inch rims with tires pretty much unused for 500 bucks, as well they are laced to XR400 hubs, but I would be taking those off.

Only two things:

Will the angles of the spoke holes done for the 400 match the 250 hubs. If not they will need re-angled. If the hubs are within an inch in diameter at the flange I'd think they'd do fine.

Second is the reason for having 17s. If running mainly road with occasional good dirt/gravel roads they are fine. If a lot of dirt/gravel and true single track trail riding the stock 18/21 is better. Sure, you can do anything with either wheel set, but one is better than the other when at the fringe a bit more.

That's all I have.

Yeah I'm looking for a bit more road use with logging road so supermoto is the way to go.

Can you even get rims re angled?

If necessary, yes, I know Woody's does them. You're going to sink about $90/set in spokes. So if you buy rims for $500 then spokes come in around $180 and another $200 in tires, lacing them yourself, it ain't gonna be cheap. Personally I'd look for a set of SM wheels/tires from a 250SF, which would likely save you money over all.

thanks a lot :), the wheels have tires on them but they may be too big, I may end up not buying them at all because like you said SF wheels would be so much easier. theyre just hard to find here, and shipping from the US would probably be an arm and a leg.

Depending on where you are, you may be able to source spokes cheaper. Possibly making the deal not so bad. I think they can run up to a 140 on the back, maybe a 120 on the front, but I don't know that for sure.
