KLX running very lean

Just took the bike out of summer storage; I had drained the fuel tank. With fresh gas, it starts right up and runs OK (but too fast) on choke, but leans out and is lacking power when choke is off. Plug is very white after short ride. Drained float bowl, no change. Air filter is new last spring and still clean. Do I have an intake air leak somewhere? Any suggestions for troubleshooting??? Thanks from Naples, FL.

If it was running fine when you put the bike up, I doubt you have an air leak. Unless you did some extensive work of some other kind during storage, your problem is probably in the carb. It sounds a bit like a partially plugged pilot circuit and/or other residue in the carb from storage. I've come to the conclusion that just draining the carb before storage doesn't always insure a successful start-up later on. It seems that some residue still gums up the smaller circuits in the carb. I've started insuring that my fuel in the tank and carb is fully treated with a fuel stabilizer before shutting it down for long periods. It seems like the stabilizer keeps the pilot jet and other small circuits clean even as the fuel in the carb evaporates to some degree. I used to think that fuel stabilizer was more snake oil than not, but I've changed my mind after not having start-up issues on everything from my chainsaw, lawn tractors, and motorcycle even after long periods of inactivity. I'm thinking you'll need to pull the carb and do an extensive clean-out and blow-out with some spray can carb cleaner and compressed air.

Thanks TNC. I don't have a shop manual. Is there any guidance for carb removal on this forum?

I think there's an online manual available in a sticky at the start of this forum, isn't there?

jpb: In this thread, which holds a wealth of info https://www.kawasakiforums.com/forum...q-links-30733/

go down to my post #20, under CVK carb, and see a link to an HMF forum thread that is pretty good CARB REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS.

TNC, I found the 09 manual in stickies, thanks.
IDRIDR, I'm going there now, thanks.

btw, there appears to be a throttle position sensor on my 07, but it's not mentioned in the 09 manual???

Kawi ditched the TPS in the 09+ models. Didn't do anything anway from what a few members here found with some testing.

Thanks Wildcard, that explains why I don't see the TPS connector on the carb on my 09 KLX. Can I ditch the TPS on the 07 or will that create a problem?
