KLX Crankcase vent?
Just got back from the LA Barstow to Vegas dual sport ride. Rode the bike hard for 488 miles through sand and rocks. Noticed it was losing a lot of oil through the cam cover seal. Was wondering if there is a crankcase vent that could be clogged and create excess pressure to force oil out there. Anyone have this happen before? Where is the vent located?

Find a hose about 3/8 to 1/2 in diameter leading from the top of your air box to the crank case on the right side. Did you try re-torquing the cover bolts? |
The ride was long, dusty and difficult. I had not ridden much sand before so that was a learning experience. Only crashed twice the second day. A real test of endurance, we rode sunup to sundown both days. Saw more flat tires than any dual sport ride I have ever been to. The KLX performed pretty well once you got going. It was sometimes hard to start out in deep sand.
I noticed the bike was seeping oil there before the ride and checked the cover bolts before the ride and they were fine, that's why I suspect the vent may be clogged. |
Is it leaking all around that seal? Or just at the half moons? If it's at the half moons its quite common.

You just need to pull the cover off and put a dab of silicone at the corners of those half moons. Or replace the gasket, some have had to just replace it.
