Default KLX charging system

Does the Klx 250s have a sufficient enough charging system to install a cigarette lighter port to charge an Iphone or GPS device without harm to the bike? I understand using a spotlight or something that requires alot of power would probably hurt it, but can you get away with charging something small off your bike?

yes..have one installed on my handlebar...charges my gps and phone on long rides...sometimes charging both at the same time with a splitter....just to check to see if it drained the battery, i plug in my trickle charger...it goes from charging to fully charged in matter of seconds....so battery is fine (stock battery)...

The KLX has a bit of extra charging power. Some searches here would give you numbers and some good details. I run grip heaters without any problem.

Service manual says the alternator is rated for 16A - 14V @5000 rpm. That's 224 watts. The main fuse is 20A. Cell phone charger shouldn't be a problem. It won't run your smoothie machine.

Headlight - 55W
Tail light - 21W
Front turn signal - 10W
Rear turn signal - 10W
Radiator fan is fused at 10A - probably only 60W max

That 156W max which leave you 68W to charge your battery and phone.
Nominal would only be 76W leaving you 148W or 12A.
Maybe. Just guessing.

I've run my 75 watt heated jacket, gps, and led driving lights for hours non-stop. As long as you're not idling in traffic a lot it's OK.

Yep, like these guys, been charging my cellphone/GPS it for a few years.

^ 68 watts would probably be enough for a power inverter and small laptop! haha
