A brand new OEM klx 300 header is about half what an aftermarket runs. Take offs are even shorter $$$$.

In the grand scheme of things how much more "performance" are we looking at by throwing down on a $4-450 muffler system vs. $100-150 for an klx 300 take off or OEM take off plus a slip on can. ????

If I OPT for an OEM klx 300 header will any klx 300 header MATE to my 2006 KLX 250 or only certain years?

None really to speak of. You can use a stock 300R muffler & header & be just about as good off as anything (except looks, weight, etc). But the 300R muffler & 250S mufflers are different animals. Use the 250S muffler to hold down your garage floor from floating away.

I assume you mean "If I opt for an OEM KLX 300 header will any KLX 300 MUFFLER....."

Then yes, barring passenger pegs.

+1. The performance differences between aftermarket exhausts don't amount to a hill of bean in most cases. It all depends upon what you want for sound, looks and weight. Oh, and how much you want to spend, of course

Anyone know if the stock KLX300 muffler is more quiet than most of the aftermarket mufflers? I have a 2-bros and although I love the power, it's frickin' LOUD. I'm thinking of putting a full KLX300 setup (stock muffler and header) on my '09 250 for my "around town" riding. I saw a '99 KLX300 header on e-bay for 50 bucks and a guy locally has a 2002 KLX300 muffler he'll sell me cheap. I think that will bolt onto my 2009 KLX250S, won't it?

Yeah, as long a both header and muffler are for a KLX 300, it will fit. There are length issues if you mix and match.

That setup is louder than the stock soda straw, but MUCH quieter than a 2bros. FMF Q4 is the most quiet aftermarket muffler available for this bike.

Thanks, tremor. That should work out great then. I'd like it to be louder than the stock pea-shooter but not as loud as the aftermarket exhaust slip-ons.

I know I have said this many times before. The biggest performance bang for the $ is a FSW header and a stock KLX300 exhaust with the but plug removed and a turn down tip. Should cost less than $200.00. The header Does make a difference. It is a very good set up that I ran for quite a while before going to a full FSW system. It is not overly loud, quite pleasant as long as you have the turn down tip. It is much quieter than my buddies FSW header/FMF exhaust combo and my FSW full system is quieter than his. I also have a quiet tip that I have never used. Another advantage is the 300 exhaust will never require re-packing. The aftermarket systems are much lighter, look cool, and require maintenance. I have not heard the FMF Q4 but it may be quieter than a stock KLX300 exhaust with a turn down tip. As with any exhaust upgrade it is important to do all the "free mods" and properly jet the bike.

Other than the restriction I like the sound I'm getting out of my stock 250 can. It's been generously perforated to differing depths and has a low throaty thump that's not too noisy.

KLX 300 header on the way.

Does anybody hear have (or know of) a good stocker 300 muff that's taking up room they might be persuaded to part with????

I'm saving up for a 331.
