How much do you think a KLX 250 S with a seized engine is worth?
Bike is a 2006 KLX 250 S with a clean title and just under 9000 miles on it. Jumped time at 3000 RPM and the engine is seized. Normal wear and tear for the age and mileage
It depends on how much damage is done to the engine. If it broke a rod and damaged the cranshaft, piston, cylinder and head then there's really not much worth saving. If it just bent some valves or damaged a piston it would be worth saving. It all depends on the amount of damage and if someone thinks it's worth fixing.
Key point - it is not seized, that is a piston stuck in the cylinder. It has slammed the piston into the valves and very likely will require at a minumum, new valves. At a maximum, a head assembly, piston, crank (can't buy rod), and pretty much a complete rebuild. So figure it is a rolling chassis and offer maybe $300-500 since that's possibly what could be gotten out of it parted out on ebay. You could also do a search and see what a used engine might cost.
Maybe buy it and stick a used EX500 engine in the frame!
I got to see him either at San Antonio Drag Raceway (Double Eagle) or Green Valley Dragway in the DFW area when I was a teenager in about 1965-1967...not sure exact year. My step-dad was in a drag racing club in San Antonio, TX, and it's where I got my motorhead disease. He helped me build my first car when I was 15, a '57 Chevy 210, 2-door post with a 283...you could get a full driver's license at 15 at that time.
While looking for FI heads for the smallblock, I stumbled upon a 409, dual 4bbl, '63 Impala SS, convertible at one of the big wrecking yards that they were parting out. This was in 1967, and the car was still drivable...kind of su****ious now. I drove it and then called my stepdad to come over and drive it. I bought the complete engine for $300...still have the receipt around here somewhere. Anyway, that was the big start of my drag racing sickness...LOL!
Growing up in San Antonio we had a guy there named Charlie Potter who was a chopper rider and apparently even a member of the local Bandidos. He and/or others claimed he was a relative of E.J. Potter, but I kind of think it was BS. Charlie went on to become "Honest" Charlie with a relatively famous tattoo shop in SA. He's slightly older than me, and I can still remember high school letting out and seeing Charlie pick up a senior girl in the parking lot that he was dating. Seeing him on his chopper was one of those elements that got my interest into motorcycles even though I never owned a chopper. "Then Came Bronson" made a bigger impact on me...LOL!
I got into bikes in 1969-70 from an awesome Cycle magazine shot of John Desoto racing one of the first Inter AMs at Pepperell dressed like the image below, but on a straight with his Montesa Capra pretty much vertical and a serious roost off the back wheel. Way cool!
When I got my trials bike in 71 I rode around in a tee with a long underwear shirt under it. Wore 16" lineman boots too.
