Default HELP! KLX cam chain guide installation

Assembling a 2009 KLX 250S... did some valve work. When disassembling the top end, I removed the front cam chain guide per the manual. Now I'm not sure I have it installed properly. Seems like it just lays there loosely, and I can't really see into the bottom end. The manual shows a retaining plate and screw that holds in in place. Anyone ever install one without removing the side cover and clutch?

The guide has a notch on the bottom edge that fits into the recess created by that retaining plate and the crankcase. You can slide the guide down the front of the cylinder until it fits into that recess, use a light to verify that it's fully seated-when it is in place it will not move freely when you pull up on it.

Some things you just have to feel your way in.
