Default Help with 09 klx250s

I just bought a 09 250s and I'm working on breaking it in, but hot starts are hard with out using the choke. I must choke it and give it a small amount of throttle to get it back up and running. This is after irt is shut off for over 5 min. I think she's lean but there are no jets to adjust on the carb. Dirt? Any thoughts?

They do come extremely lean, and there are jets to adjust on the carb...they're just inside. You can adjust the fuel/air screw on the underside of the carb after you remove the factory cover plate. If you've read some of the posts here, you can get some jetting numbers for your situation to try and improve performance overall, not just at start up. You really need to remove the carb and do at least a small rejet job, so just remove the air/fuel screw cover plate and do the jetting at the same time.

I had exactly the same problem with my 09. I took it back to the Kawi dealer and they opened up the Fuel/air screw and solved the problem. (I would have done this myself, but I was pissed and just had the dealer do the F/A screw).
As TNC has said, the carb has to be removed to adjust the F/A screw as the factory puts a stupid plug covering the screw location. If you are removing the carb anyway you might as well change the jetting by using a DJ kit which will help overall performance. The kit is very easy to install.
Good luck.

Do the jet kit and an aftermarket slip on and you won't believe the perfomance. Oh, don't forget to either remove the snorkle or replace with a KDX one. I really love mine after my mods. Now I only use the choke to start it and after that it's good to go. You may also find that when the bike is cold, it is a B!#(& to start. I always turn my gas off and let it run out of fuel if I'm going to let it sit for a while. By the way, update your setting so we know where you are. Welcome to the KLX world and the forum.

Talking Thanks for the help

Thanks for the help. Do you guys think I should break it in before the mods? I planed on a moose jet kit and the fmf power bomb header with a Q4 slip on but was waiting till she was broke in. I've got 175mi on her now but hate to wait till I get 1k to do any mods. Thanks

I just looked and can see the spot for the air/fuel screw. That's at a very stupid spot!!! Ya have to take the carb off everytime to get to it? Thats almost as stupid as some of the stuff on the Bobcats I have to fix! Ok now that I got that off my chest, does anyone know does the speedo actually tell you when your low on fuel? The manual says it does but I see no sensor in the tank?

No the U.S. version does not tell you if you're low on fuel.

Also, get a Kouba screw and replace your A/F screw. It will make your life a lot easier.

I also own an 09' and i waited till about 500 miles then i put a fmf powerbomb-and q4 silencer ,moose jet kit,and a twin air filter. The power is great. Read the instructions w/ the jet kit (very simple) and you will have no problem. You will be satisified. also check the JETTING forums and you'll find tons of info. Good luck and congrats on the bike.
