Head to Head Comparison, jet/pipe vs sprocket
This weekend, during a 110 mile ride, two 2014 KLX250s went head to head. One, a jetted and piped (header and slip-on) with stock 14/42 sprockets. The other, stock carb and exhaust (pea shooter) and 14/52 sprockets. The day consisted of both dirt and street, with the street resulting the easiest comparison. We swapped bikes to help with rider reaction time, etc. The jetted bike had great throttle response and a much better sound, deep and throaty. The stock carb bike had slow throttle response and could barely be heard running. The jetted bike gets about 35mpg, the stock bike, just over 50mpg.
The light turns green and off they go …no difference, neck and neck the entire way. Then at about 70mph, the jetted bike pulls away until hitting top end speed about 10mph later. We swapped bikes and again we're off, the same result, neck and neck.
The stock carb bike sacrificed top end speed to gain the higher torque at the bottom end, going no faster than 72 mph. The jetted bike sacrificed mpg and an extra $500 dollars to gain a better throttle feel and sound, while still be able to go 80mph.
The end result is the jetted bike will be changing sprockets soon, to gain 15% more torque off the line. Our guess will be the stock bike will be left behind. For me, the owner of the stock carb bike is satisfied with what I have. I like the better mpg allowing for a true 100 mile day as well as the extra money in my pocket. As for the higher freeway speeds lost to the regearing …no need to go over 70 on the freeway. I'm not trying to sway anyone one way or the other, but for me, I wanted to really see the difference and was excited to have found a rider with the same bike and set-up the opposite of mine, perfect for this test. Be safe everyone, and ride on.

If the "jetted" bike was running a proper lidless setup, he would have run off and hid from the stock bike in all situations/scenarios. Top end would see 72mph vs 100+ mph !!!
To have run neck and neck till 70 mph is proof the "Jetted" bike has not been jetted correctly.. Have him PM me and we shall see how ya'lls next ride goes..lol
