Hard Starting Cold KLX 250S problem Resolved
 

Since new, my bike has been a bitch to start when it is below 40 degrees out.
Several things would help.....like turning the fuel off and running the carb dry whenever I get home....or tipping the bike over on its side to spill some gas over into the carb.
But they are a pain to do.
Others suggested re-jetting.....some people here had mixed results.
One solution that works is mounting up a pumper-carb. Kinda expensive though.

I found an alternative.
So I put a simple low-$$ fix which is a snap to install and flawless in operations.
I got a jet-ski primer kit ($15) and installed it on the bike.
When it is cold out, I prime it with a pull/push on the primer knob, pull the choke, and hit the starter. It cranks up immediatly every time.
Installing it was easy.
I cut the fuel line about 2 inches below the fuel cutoff valve.
I then inserted a "T" connector with a 1/8" connector in the middle.
Be sure to use clamps, as you do not want it to come loose.
I then connected up a 4-inch section of fuel line which came with the primer and attached it to the 1/8" T.
I zip-tied the primer on the mount for the idle-adjust knob.
I then drilled a small hole into the top of the plastic air-intake hose imediatly before the carb.
I glued on a 1/8" fitting into the hole and attached a hose to it.
I ran the hose under the seat and plugged it into the outlet of the primer
Done!

Looks like a decent solution. All you really needed to do is gain access to the fuel screw and turn it out to about 2.5 rounds from seated. No new jets required.

Yep, that'd do the trick...:D
But is that hose gas safe? (never seen clear fuel hose like that)

Easier said than done. [sm=yikesomg.gif]
That requires taking the bike down to free up the carb.
Then you have to remove the carburator.
Then drill out the metal "smog anti-alteration" plug.
Once that is done, you will have access to the screw, which can then be adjusted.
The say a prayer that you dont brake anything when you put it back together again.
Much to much work for my lazy butt.

I got this off ebay. Any of them should be fine.
You can also get them at dealers that sell power-sport equipment like jetskis and snowmobiles.

The hose came with the unit, which is specifically sold as a gas primer pump mod kit for jetskis.

I thought it kind of looked questionable myself, so you can bet that I will be keeping a close eye on it.

If it turns to goo or goes yellow on me I'll post it right away.

I have seen clear fuel hose before. It will turn yellow over time.

Its not that hard.....maybe wrenching on cars for 9 years, then wrenching on bikes for 2 years I see things a little different......I can have my carb out on the benchin less than 15 minutes, taking my time.[sm=icon_stickpoke.gif][sm=lildevil.gif]

Seriously though, to get access to the plug, all you need to do is rotate the carb in the mounting boots, if your not changing jets you really dont have a need to remove the carb.

So all that is easier than running the gas out? I don't get it. But glad you found a solution that works for you. ;)
