Question Hand Gaurd Questions

Afternoon all,

I'm looking at getting some hand gaurds for my KLX, but I really don't know much about what I need to make it happen. I really like the Acerbis Unikos but I don't know what I need to mount them. I found this set on a website another member had mentioned on a thread about Bark Busters, but I don't know if it's "complete" with all mounting hardware. It says it have "plastic mount kit", my questions are:

Is this set a good set?
Do I need more mounting hardware?
If any member has them, how would you rate them/do you suggest them?

Uniko Vented Handguards - Red $30.02

There is the link for the Acerbis Unikos that I like.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys!

The link says the nylon mounts are included, but without picks I don't know.

I first tried Tusk brand from Rocky Mountain ATV. Their D-Flex Handguards with Spoilers.

Tusk D-Flex Handguards | Dirt Bike | Rocky Mountain ATV/MC

Then Barkbusters went onto the KLX and the Tusks were moved to the KLR. Notice the aluminum bar with plastic protector mounted to it.

Both of these require an insert into the handlebar end to hold the handguard (that looks like this): Tusk Aluminum Handguards | Dirt Bike | Rocky Mountain ATV/MC

Our stock KLX handlebars need to be either drilled out or end trimmed off to install the insert. PITA from what some say. I got different bars.

I think those are motocross handuards wich don't actually wrap around your hand and controls. They have one connector to the handlebar and it is very flexible.

Most riders here prefer enduro handguards which wrap all the way around the hands, and completely cover the controls and levers with 2 connections and has a metal brace that attaches in 2 places for greater strength.

Having said that, if you're not riding offroad and only need the guards for wind protection, the MX guards may be the simplest, easiestand cheapest option.

If full protection, go with the barkbusters or similar construction. If you look at the posted picture, the standoff near the triple tube is about 3.5-4" long, this is good.

I put Acerbis (model ? with 2.75" standoffs, center of bar to mount screw) on mine, in my opinion there is not enough room behind the units for the clutch & brake levers and they will not clear the brake reservior, etc. Acerbis may make some with longer standoffs, but mine are very tight and every other ride I am rebending them as any drop requires adjustment.

Thanks everyone! I haven't done much riding at all on my KLX, sadly. But I'm wanting to get it ready for the spring rides I want to go on.

I found some of the Tusk D-Flex like IDRIDR had mentioned, I'm diggin' them more than others.

Question on that for IDRIDR, You put two different links up, would I need to purchase both? The first link to the actual hand guards says "Package includes: 1-pair of Aluminum Handguards with 7/8" bar hardware and 1-pair of Plastic Handguard Shields."

So I shouldn't need the to purchase the aluminum hand guard you provided in the second link, correct?

I installed a pair of Biketique HG1-G for my KLX. You will also need to purchase a pair of 65mm extensions/swivels. I wrote a couple of posts in this thread -

I think you're correct and I should have been more clear, but wanted to show what the aluminum bar looked like. This pick shows the Tusks with aluminum bar, green plastic handguard shield, and black spoilers (pretty good wind protection).

edit: I recall others saying that the tusk handguard aluminum bars aren't the strongest out there and have bent on occasion. Same goes for the Tusk handlebars but I've used them on the KLX for nearly two years now. My Tusk handlebars and handguards have taken several good falls with no bending, but I don't ride and crash as hard as some others around here. You can see some pretty good scuffing of the left plastic on the pic above with bike on trailer. Barkbusters are claimed to be stronger, which is why they went on the KLX and the Tusks moved to the KLR.

Awesome! Thank you for the visual aid with all of this! I'm diggin' the D-Flex for sure. I don't really ride off road too much, but I want to start and they look like they can handle what/where I plan to ride. I live in the desert so I shouldn't be hitting anything except sand, if I drop it at all. Fingers crossed that I don't

I've had nothing but good luck with the tusk handguards. I drop my bike all the time and have never even come close to bending or breaking them. The tusk bars, however, bent on my first low speed drop with them. I called and talked to customer service and they said they hear that happening all the time. They will bend if people knock their bike over in the garage. The guy at RMATV recommended pro-tapers. I did some research and ordered the SE model. I've dropped my KLX a ton of times since then and the pro tapers are still perfect.

I was looking at the Pro-Tapers SE, but I don't understand all the different models, or types I guess. Like the "School Boy High, School Boy Low, Reed/Henry, Windham, Carmichael, Factory Suzuki"

What is all that even meaning?

I'm extremely new to the modification of motorcycles!
