Grass Hopper is back, with even more stopping power!

While I am deciding on what new Motard tires to buy, I chucked a set of trail rubbers onto my old rims re fitted my dirt option.
I decided to try out this option and to use the much bigger SF front brake rotor. ( Mainly cos I was too lazy to change the calliper bracket, and it's easier to whip on a rotor. )

Well I can happily report that the combination of braided hoses and a large rotor will comfortably put you over the bars and onto your head, if you so desire, without any of the old mushiness the KLX front brake was known for!

Pretty neat, isn't it! I have the KLX650C which runs the 300mm rotor and it has some serious brake power. I was at the AMA Museum yesterday and noticed one of Ricky Carmichael's bikes that was on display - the front rotor on it was somewhere between a 300 to 320mm. I've never noticed that on any other motocrossers. Obviously Carmichael wanted a LOT of brake power.

I'd love to have the big rotor on my 250 too. I have a 300mm from another 650 wheel and will have to look at what it takes to move the caliper... whoo hooo! more brakes!

A calliper bracket available from Kawasaki for the KLX 250 SF will move the s calliper to fit an SF rotor. All very cheap and easy if you either live in Thailand, have a friend in Thailand or own a Kawasaki dealership in the USA.

I did not realize they just use a bracket. On the 650s there are two different fork legs, one used with the smaller rotor on the R model and another used on the C model with the 300mm rotor.

I appreciate the tip. Just looked up the SF rotor size - 300mm! Can do!

In the image below is it P/N 43044?

Yip, that's all you need, 43044, plus the Rotor, which you have. It is a very easy mod.

Only problem is that the bracket is ~$115 + the rotor. You can buy an EBC supermoto 320 mm kit for $190. I suppose if you ran across some used parts off of a SF then it might be a better deal.

It's a flat steel plate and is similar to the one on the S model, but extended to work with the 300mm rotor. One can be laid out in CAD to suit the 300mm rotor, then cut. I didn't realize it was that simple.

If I remember correctly, the bracket has some funky offset stamping where the pad tangs engage so I don't think that it's a simple plate...but I could be wrong.

Mark, if it's a simple job I would be interested in doing this mod if you could provide the bracket.
