Frequent oil changes w/same filter ?
I just bought a 2009 klx 250s with ~ 2300 miles on it
The previous owner says he did 2 oils changes already
the book says it is fine until 6000 miles or something crazy but I plan to do it more often as it is already looking pretty dark after my 200 miles of hard riding (I have no confermation of what changes were done but the oil was still pretty clean 200 miles ago)
I know that using the same filter in a car is not recommended but if I am changing every 1500 miles can it be reused once?
I plan on using rotella regular (maybe synth) on the recommendation of a biker buddy
I am new to the board... new to the klx and new to bikes in general
let the fireworks begin!

No fireworks from me, but I've always been the kind to do all or nothing....usually all...seldom nothing. If I'm going to crawl around on the floor changing the oil, replacing the filter only adds 5 minutes and about $7 to the operation. I have issues with running clean, new oil through a dirty filter, which is full of dirty oil.
The one exception I made is when I bought my 650R, changed the oil to Mobil 1 Racing 4T, and installed a new clutch 200 miles later. I drained the oil, changed the clutch, filled with new oil, but left the filter. The oil in the engine was the same color as the oil I poured in, so at that point it would've just been a waste of a practically new filter.
Any other time..the filter goes.

Well depends how far and hard you've rode. I generally change both but if you change the oil after only a few hundred miles I don't see why you couldn't leave the filter in. My last oil change was after only like 700 miles and it was all roads, so I left the filter in. Only reason I changed the oil was I knew I had been losing alot out of the cam cover gasket and once I had that changed I figured I should get the oil right.
i change my oil every 1000 miles, the filter every other oil change. if you use a good filter ( i use k&n ), you should be good every other change. for oil, i use a blend (maxima), bike seams to like it. oh, and welcome to the forum, now post some pics of that bike of yours

+1. You can get a K&N from RockyMountain for the same price the stealership charges for the Kawasaki filter.
Thx for all the input... I decided to use a k&n filter and Motul 5100 and will likey change the oil every 1000 miles and swap in a new filter every other change.
Shifting is super smooth and clutch engagement has improved as well... almost grabby (in a good way) in comaprison.
Thx to all
P.S Just checked my gas milage and I am getting ~50mpg with mostly aggressive riding... 20% dirt and 80% hywy at 65-80 mph top speed so far was 90 mph with a slight wind at my back and full tuck... not bad for a completely stock bike
I am getting the highway stutter some mention when running at a constant 70mph (annoying but not unbearable)
