Encourage my bad behavior
I love my KLX and I'm going to hang on to it. But I made a mistake in selling my W650, and I need a midsize bike for longer road trips.
There are a couple of clean, used, low mileage pre-2008 KLR's within an hour of me. I can pay cash, it will give my checkbook a good thumpin' but I can pull it off without jeapordizing myself. Problem is, I'm experiencing pre-buyers remorse, and I need some of you guys to give me a push so I can pull the trigger maybe tomorrow or the next day, and pick up on the weekend. Tell me what a dummy I'd be to pass this up, that one only lives once, or regail me with stories of the good times you had on your KLR. Something to buck up my confidence so I can wipe out a years worth of savings in one shot. :eek: |

Honestly, i love both bikes, the klr is wonderful on the road. I might be looking to buy a newer one next year. If i absolutely HAD to get rid of one i dont know which one it would be. 55-60mpg daily rider to work. Compared to 16mpg in my truck. Last year i put 4500 miles on the KLR.

If you plan on highway riding much, the KLX just isn't safe. Wind blows you around a good bit and more importantly, the acceleration from 50 on up to 80 just is not adequate to remove yourself from a dangerous situation.
Then figure that the mpg at those high speeds isn't much better, if at all, on the 250. |
It seems like the KLX and KLR compliment each other, each one picks up where the other lets off. Sort of 80/20 and 20/80.
Right now there's an '06 and '07. I'm lusting over the '06 because it's the lime green one and has some good farkles. The '07 is more stock and still needs the doo done. The problems I have highway riding the KLX is why I want to do this, the KLX is like a leaf in a hurricane on the fwy. |
What are the mileages and the prices? The colour you prefer with farkles sounds like a winner. Doo done on the Greenie? SOLD!!

I have both the KLR650 (Green 06! :p) and the KLX331. While I will say the KLX is more fun to toss around the trails, the KLR is the ONE BIKE I couldn't do without. The KLR will go almost anywhere (once you upgrade the suspension), and it certainly goes faster with ease where the KLX struggles a bit. Hauling camping gear? The KLR is definitely better there, too.
You can get a good used KLR for under 3000.00, with all the upgrades done....except the suspension. RICOR is the way to go on this bike...my RICOR-equipped KLR650 outclimbed my upgraded suspension DR350...so, I sold the DR. The Inertia valve that RICOR puts in their suspensions is THAT good. Yep, get a KLR650! |

I have both, and feel that the KLR is 50/50, no way is it 20 dirt! But the 50% street is where it is like Charlie Sheene and...WINS! I have the KLX and sure, it can hit 80, but the KLR can do 80-85 MPH from Pittsburgh PA to Savannah Georgia stopping only for fuel and food. The KLR can also single track, ask EMS, he has seen me do it. It hill climbs, jumps, wheelies, throws mud 30 feet in the air, crosses continants, creates adventures and sets your soul free. For me.... I would give up the KLX in a heart beat before I even considered giving up my 09 KLR650 adventure/touring/single track/dirt bike that makes me whole.
Really, having both is wonderfull, but I'll bet you a beer you get a KLR and you'll wake up in the morning for work and make a bee-line straight to the KLR650 in the morning... and you'll start thinking about how you can set the alarm 30 min early and take the long way to work..... I put over 11,000 miles on my 09 last year. Over 2500 was in a 8 day period that I went to Hilton Head Island, Savannah, Deals Gap, Blue Ridge Parkway and back home. You had a W650 and let it go? :eek: Man, I'd love to have one of those. I'm hoping the W800 comes to the US this year. I was wanting the new Honda RS, but the W800 is so much better. :D

I have no direct personal experience on a KLR, never ridden one myself, but I used to ride with a guy around here until he moved away who rode one and you would swear he was on a KDX, not a KLR. :D |
