Drove 2006 klx250 without oil, trying to determine the Damage

Hi all,

Yesterday morning I was driving my 2006 Klx250 with 7500 Miles on it and it just died on me. It was the same kind stop as when I am out of gas but I had just put gas in it. I looked at my oil level and all the oil was gone. I had changed my oil about 1400 Miles before with fully synthetic oil. I started back up to see if the engine was turning, and it started back up but died when I revved it up so I did not try that again thinking I would damage the engine. I then took it back to my place with a trailer and tried putting oil in it and starting it back up. It started up, I let it run with the new oil. After 5 minutes, I tried revving it up and it continued to run when the rpms were down. So I tried riding it slowly, I passed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear but it shut off when I tried to go down the gears. I don't hear any loud high pitch noises from the engine.

I am wondering what kind of problem do you think this is? How bad of damage do you think my engine has? And also my Klx does not leak, do you think its possible to burn that much 1.5L of oil in 1400 Miles? Thanks

It is possible to burn that much oil, but you would have likely notice the giant plume of blue smoke trailing behind you. You will get feedback from those who are more knowledgeable that I, but I would start by pulling the spark plug to see what it looks. I would then pull the oil filter and cut it open to see what you find.

I would pull the valve cover off and look for bluing. If it looks ok remove cam retaining cap and inspect journals. It any damage stick a fork in it. It's done.

The bottom end needs little oil to live. Worst case you probably need a head , cylinder ,piston.

Good time for a BB351 kit.

Check the radiator fluid for oil.
Sometimes a leaky head gasket will seep oil into the cylinder, and not be too much blue smoke. 1400 miles with what, 1.5 quarts isn't much.
