Default Damn valve cover gasket...blowing oil/air out of the half moon hole.

My bike is sitting at Wal mart right now because I didn't want to risk driving home with it blowing oil/air out of the valve cover. Don't ask how this happened because I can't really explain it. I have an 09 cylinder head and gasket on my 06 klx and I read that they have a shrinkage problem.

If I throw some extra oil in it and take it easy on the way home, could I drive it? It's a little over 10 minute drive with about a 6 mile stretch of 50mph high way driving with the rest being 25-40mph roads.

I would not put "extra" in. Fill it to the top line on the sight glass and grab a quart to take with you and check it every few miles if its blowing out really bad.

Thats what i would do, but considering the luck you've had, you might want to try and get a truck to bring it home.. lol.

That's what I plan on doing. I never intended on filling it past the top line. I was just concerned that it might be a bad idea. The valve cover just gets a little bit of oil "splashed" into it right? It's not actually pumped into the valve cover, right?

Those gaskets are a P.I.T.A., that was the hardest part of the cam mod for me.

Yeah, and $30 to replace! What a rip off! Does anyone happen to have the torque specs for those 3 bolts that hold the valve cover on?

For the 09 model it calls for 87 inch pounds.

They are actually 69 inch pounds and easy to strip so be careful. If you want to save some money you can actually get the valve cover gasket to stay in place by using a gasket glue.
Tip the valve cover upside down and glue a small section at a time and put a weight on it like a piece of 2 by four and leave it over night, then glue another section down and get another weight and do it again till you have the whole thing glued down. Then get everything ready, put gasket sealer on the engine side of the gasket and put it together.

Put the gasket in the freezer for a couple of hours....that's what I heard.
