cooked my catalytic converter?
after doing the MCM mod this summer i also did the O2 eliminator mod since i was recomended to do it
and with the addition of the following i cooked my cat :rolleyes: stock EU exhaust with factory cat only removed snorkel (ran lidless for a short time) the later colder weather made the bike more rich when cold and only running short trips within city made for a lot of richer running due to cold temp my exhaust now has a distinct tweeting/chirping sound, also has a funky smell kinda egg like. And last it also has a spot on the side that looks like it was very hot even more the the rest of it this gives me the excuse to buy a new exhaust this spring with power commander maybe :cool: even ad a bigger tank so i can plan some trips :cool: second small update on the "scrape" sound went by a dealer and their tech told me it might be 1 of 3 things 1 worn clutch starting to get noisy before slipping 2 possible tight valve 3 normal engine sound happening after oil gets thinner after engine warmed up and i am not used to the sound after running lidless |
btw i still love this bike even with the small hiccups

A overly rich fuel mixture will play havoc on cat converters. It works by oxidizing(burning) any hydrocarbons. The o2 eliminator may be driving the mixture overly rich and the p/c should be able to correct that. If the cat gets super hot it will melt the ceramic substrate inside and could cause a restriction.

Dont understand why you say the cold weather made the bike run richer? Cold air is more dense and = a more lean condition. Same goes with a cold engine, runs more lean until it fully warms-- its why chokes were designed.

You could use a vacuum/pressure gauge to determine if the exhaust is restricted. |
currently the only problem i made is adding the O2 eliminator that i have since removed after my catalytic converter got damaged (was told it was nessery after removing snorkel and doing mcm mod )
these other ones i did not create the scraping sound from the motor is not an issue i made (still trying to find the cause) had some other oops happening like the following (not from me tinkering) rear right indicator got loose on highway and melted on exhaust ignition barrel having trubble turning from steering lock starting issues due to faulty battery (later replaced) rear wheel bearing needing replacing and some other things i cant remember atm i call them hickups since some of it comes with it having 11k miles of offroad running before i got it and is easy fixed (apart from that engine noise) so i am not blaming anything hence calling them hichups, and i do love this bike |
good idea but i do not have a vacuum gauge aviable to test the exhaust
but a new exhaust has been ordered i went with this GPR KAT GPE-EVO TITANIUM FULL SYSTEM EXHAUST KAWASAKI KLX 250 IE 2007/2014 | eBay i may test the old one later when i have the tools at my disposal |
The KLX has a catalytic converter?;)

the "KAT" that comes with the new one stays in a sealed bag until the cops need it :D
