I am purchasing the Kouba fuel mixture screw. Do I need to remove the carb to install? If not give me a few tips on how to do it.

Have you ever pulled off the metal cap that covers the air screw? If not, you might want to pull the carb just to make it easier. Drill a small hole in the cap and use a nail to pop it off.. Then you'll see the screw you're replacing.

If you have taken that cap off, you can just loosen the two hose clamps holding the carb to the air box and intake, and twist the carb and replace the screw that way.

 

The bottom plug is out. I have had the carb off to do the jet kit and I did not have the kouba adj screw then. I just did not want to have to pull the carb again. Thank you for the advice and photos

Yeah, the really hard part is getting the plug out of the fuel screw hole. It's not that hard, but with carb in place and not tilted, pretty darned hard. I installed my Kouba screw with the plug already off and the carb in place, not tilted. You have to find just the right sized/shaped/length screwdriver to get the old fuel screw out. I had my old KLR650 fuel screw adjuster that I'd bought years ago, and it worked great on the KLX to get the OEM fuel screw out. Of course, getting in the new Kouba screw is easy. It helps to put a little Vaseline or such on the o-ring for the first installation. If you have to go out more than 2.5 turns, just change the pilot jet accordingly. The Kouba will fall out if too loose.
