Chain stretch

I just bought my first bike a 2007 KLX250s I was wanting to know how often you have to adjust for chain stretch. I have 160 miles on it now and noticed its pretty stretched now and that I need to tighten it. Do they stretch a lot during the break in period, and after I moved the adjuster on the wheel all the way past would you then take a link out of the chain to make it shorter and shorten the adjuster?

RE: Chain stretch

The first few hundred miles the chain does stretch. Try to check it every 2-300 miles till you break 1000. I have 5200 miles on mine on the original chain, and have gone to a 13 tooth front sprocket (from the stock 14) and I think I'm on adjuster mark 5.

I don't think it will ever stretch that far I have 2200 miles on mine and have only adjusted it one time..... it is supposed to be loose it should come about 1/4" from the top of the chain guard on the side stand....These bikes have a lot of travel so it needs slack for that and the more the rider weighs the more it needs;)
