Anyone try this?
That was my thread on experiments with ignition curve tuning using the PayRay unit.
I had to abandon the experiments due to erroneous data somehow slipping into the acceleration data streams - tainting results and leaving me with no discernible direction to "head toward" for further trials.. Only other option was to spend many hundreds of dollars on dyno rental time - which I would have done if I had found reliable data for significantly increased power levels during my testing..
The specify anomaly was that the standard ignition curve would sometimes produce data that equaled the power increases I was creating from my ongoing ignition curve tweaking. I had the stock curve and the "most recent" test curve on the Payray for all testing - with all test curves having a large idle advance setting so I could verify which curve was running before a test via idle speed. Stock idle, 1300 rpm, all test curve idles,1500 rpm..
I did find a significant increase in power ramping - the test was nailing WOT from just off idle in 1st gear .. This improvement was limited to power ramp-up and not so much as an increase in peak power. In short, it "hit harder" when WOT was snapped from 1800-2000 rpm in 1st gear..
All attempts to increase peak numbers - or extend peak numbers - was somewhat inconclusive. No "earth shattering" increases were ever detected anywhere in the power levels above 5k rpm .. I surmise that I might have found an additional .5 hp (maybe up to 1 hp) in the 8500 rpm range - increases just barely noticeable to my dynobutt, but did show up in the data..
The odd initial results had me researching endlessly for knowledge and data - Turns out, it is all about flame front speeds. Richer AFR's have faster flame fronts and will not tolerate as much ignition advance as Leaner AFR's (with their slower flame fronts)..

Sidebar: Wanna kill your KLX's power ? Fuel it correctly with a lidless airbox and load on the standard KLX300R or standard Aussie KLX250 ignition map - which are straight line 35° and 40° ignition maps respectively (IIRC)..
