Default Any Practical Solutions to breathing dust?

Does anyone have any good solutions to the problen of breathing dust on the trails? I have been considering modifying my helmet to be able to filter the air a bit before I breathe it. This is in conjunction with a Camelback mod that I am making so I can drink on the go without taking my hands off the handlebars.

In casual riding this is not a problem but when I race in Hare Scrambles, I am not always in the front....ok, never in the front....so on dry days the dust is so thick I sometimes have to slow down to be able to see.

There is a couple of options:
1. Don't breathe
2. Refuse to follow ...... Only lead!
if 1 & 2 are not good options you might try using one of those disposable masks that painter use.

I was on a poker run last summer and I have to tell you that was one of the hottest, dusty rides I have ever been on. Let's see if I can dig up a picture. My only advice is to space your self out far enough to let some of the dust settle, but where is the fun in that, you might as well be riding by your self. Yep here they are, man I can taste the dust a year later looking at these pictures.[8D]

Hey Tony remember this shot? Good times.

Could always try the bandana approach as well.

Holy cow!
You guys are still riding dirt bikes at your age?????
I guess you have just one option..............get use to it!

Or.....What part of "KLX450R" are you two just not getting? Cohort at work just picked one of these pups up and I'll be damned if it won't even get big old sissy's (I fall under this category as well) down the trail post haste.

Haha, too funny all the replies on this thing.

Check out these things;

I like the valve resporator but usually use the plain mask. They are hotter than hell on your face but you're not blowing brown out of your nose for a week. In the summer here it doesn't rain for months and the dust is red clay so you're not right for days if you take too many rooster tails to the face. I just use one of the straps so that you can flip it down when you're not following.

Oh ya, there are availible at most hardware stores.

WOW! Thanks for you lively, entertaining, and informative answers. I acquired a Countrywide 2nd mortgage and used it to purchase the items that you suggested and will be testing them this weekend at practice.

The trick for me will be how to incorporate hydration, dust protection, and ease of operation into the solution. I am seriously trying to come up with some kind of "Snap-On" attachment that would supply the Camelback Hydration through a dust mask inside the front of the helmet. It would be designed as a hands-free operation so that I could concentrate on avoiding trees and at the same time staying hydrated for the 2 hour races.

I will keep you informed with what I "cook up".
