Another newb 2009 KLX250S owner

Hi guys, I just picked up a new 2009 KLX250S. Being an OLD motocrosser, I was looking for a new trail bike that was street legal. Like others, I almost bought the WR250R, but in the end it was nearly $1000 more that the KLX.

I bought this knowing not to have high hopes of the power being like my 2007 YZ250 smoker, but I must admit, it is pretty gutless.

So......you guys seem to know your stuff and I am pleading for a little help. What can I do to wake up this bike for under $100 and also under $300? I already took the choking snorkel off but that seemed to make the bike miss through the RPM range. I know the jetting is set up for SL and I live at 4000 msl.

I would like to keep the bike quiet but wake it up a bit. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Ringo

PS: The 4000 rpm break in limit is undoable. Glad to hear about varying the revs and doing fine.

Well if you want more power but want to keep it quiet...its seems like the best option is do get a klx300 muffler and header..as they flow much better....gear the sprocket 1 down in the front...rejet the bike...put a good airfilter on it...remove air box lid...

Call it a day

It's not going to compare to your KX250 as far as power.. So if that's what you want you may have made the wrong decision :)

That being said, to gain a good amount more power you'll need a big bore kit. No way around it. Basic mods will help but nothing will do what the big bore does for the same price.

Or do like me...

Stage 1....filter...irridium sparkplug...amr monster coil...jet 38/132...fmf header...hmf muffler...airbox lid removed...

Stage 2...351cc big bore kit

Stage 3...smile

What up Ringo, welcome to the best forum ever! We hope you have fun with the bike, and spend time here getting to know all the crazy members. Again welcome and see you out there. :)

I guess I didn't answer any of your questions huh? Under $100.00? 13-45 gears. Under $300.00? Hmmm jetting and a slip on? You should have said under $500.00, then I would have said 13-45, jetting and a used Muzzy. ;)

I've done most of the mods on here but the AMR MONSTER COIL is a new one to me! Tell me more - what's the benefit?!! Is this something I can't live without? :)

For $68 is doesn't really hurt. So I said why not...I know there's another member here that has an SF that has it....look in peoples sigs

Thanks everyone for the replies. It seems the jetting is a no brainer, but not sure what jetting to get, based on my altitude, nor what brand? I see Dyna Jet or FMF...? Need some help here...Also I see lots of talk about taking that CA smog junk off (do not need it where I live) I also read about guys getting some sort of Kawi snorkel...wouldn't it just be better to dump the stock one and leave it open to breathe?

Thanks for putting up with a newb.

Hey ringokelly, FMF jet kit is made by Dynojet. You'll be fine w/ no lid at all.

ringokelly 10-27-2009 02:44 PM

Excellent...thanks guys. And yes, I will buy the donuts...say when and where!

deej 10-27-2009 03:10 PM

I haven't had the air box lid on for 10,000 miles.

Welcome to the best Kawasaki site in existence ( according to Mr.Deej)

Here is what I would do to your KLX.
Ditch the air box cover, and put on a good aftermarket filter.
Pull off the smog crap
Put on a 13 tooth sprocket.
At that point you might be into it for under $100.
It will not increase HP, but it will have better throttle response and feel better

Next I would re-jet it, get some fuel in there.
If you can find a KLX 300 exhaust system on Flea Bay, buy it
That will make a big difference.

Next I would get a good slip on Muff for it, or full system, 2 Bros, Muzzy, just look for the lowest Db readings.

Next you will be were the rest of us are at, should I buy the
Bill Blue Big Bore
300cc kit @ $453
331cc kit @ $ 486
340cc kit @ $ 502
351cc kit @ $527

Me thinks ole' Sandy Claws is gonna leave the 351 kit under my tree this year !! :D

+1
I just did the 47T rear.. I like it, you need the 520 x 110 link chain.
if you just do the 13T front the stock chain is fine.
13T/47T my top speed is 69mph (indicated on speedo)

Works for me!!!!

SlapDrum 10-28-2009 04:32 AM

The KLX300 is not exactly quiet... but it is not as freakin' loud as the Big Gun I had...
Have fun!

ringokelly 10-28-2009 03:07 PM

THX a million guys.....I will let you know how I come out. BTW, if any of you are ever in Utah riding, please give me a shout, love to go out.....
