Air filter pods?
 
Any body ever try just an air filter pod on the KLX? I burnt my airbox beyond repair and instead of buying a new one I saw this online :

I just looked for a 38mm fit (pretty sure we have 38mm stock, right?)

Wondering if anybody uses/tried these? I do 60 road 40 offroad so that's where i'm not too sure if it would be good. I know use similar pods on my snowmobile and it works wonders taking off the whole airbox, but a motorbike not too sure. Thanks!

pod filters dont work very good with CV carbs from what i understand. it has to do with the need for the engine to draw from a relatively calm air source through the vacuum actuated carb slide for proper operation. at least thats how i understand it.

that being said when i get a tm36-68 pumper i will be running a pod on my supermoto klx since it uses a manual carb slide.

Aside from what wildcard said, I would be worried about water getting into the engine. It also would appear to collect more debris, which would require frequent cleaning.

There's offroad, and then there's offroad. Riding fire trails and dirt roads in one thing, running through mud and puddles, dropping the bike in the bushes on tight single track is another. Before we started riding, my son and I were involved in quarter midget racing. The air filter we used on the world formula engine (carb has a slide, just like the typical motorcycle) was similar to the one in the link above. On a dirt track we had no concern about water intake, but we used one filter for the ten lap heat, and another for the 25 lap feature, and thoroughly cleaned both after every event.

Long story short; they can be effective, but are high maintenance.

I've considered the same thing, more airflow, less weight, etc. However, the rear mud flap and plastics are connected to the air box, not to mention the air box is a main support for the carburetor.

I already have my pumper jetting spot on, and am too lazy to go and try to rejet for an extra 1/10 of a horsepower :p
