Air Box Eliminator
Before I go into this, I realize that only a small percentage ofthis forum-mostly made up ofriver crossing dirt roosting moles- would ever consider doing this, but here goes because I need something to post about

Lastweek, Imounted this BMC (similar to K&N) air filter directly to the Yoshimura/Mikuni TMR-MJN34 pumper. I orderd the filter directly from Yoshimura since it's an optional item for this carb.

In order to leave enough space to easily change the filter, something had to be done to the front end of the air box. The easiest solution was to remove the air box front half and replace it with some sort of plate. I founda kit in a catalog thatconsists ofan oil catch tank, custom cut plate, hoses and clamps. The top nipple on the tank normallyconnects to a hose thatruns the fumes back through the engine for re-burn, but I wasn'twilling to drill a holein the filter's metal plate, as I have seen others in Japan do....soooo, Iputa caliperon the nipple and ordered amini filter that should fit right over it (still on order). Istole the filter idea from an earlier write up by Nobrakes.

With the stock air filterremoved from the box, there's a void big enough to accommodate apretty robust tool kit.
Anyway, whenI tookthebike around the block, it was niceto hear only the exhaustnote without the addedhollow and very low pitchedrumblefromthe open airbox. That should helpkeep things more quiet for the neighbors during my early morning warm-ups and lessen mental fatigue onlong road trips.

Hmmmmm...,with theconsiderable perfomancemods I've done this winter (300cc kit with Wiseco piston andhigh performance cams),I honestly can't tell tell you. I do know that there is an indicated increase over the stock filter/airbox combobecause I've witnessed and read more than one dyno run on similarly configured KLX and D-tracker, butI'm afraid I've maskedanything you could feel with theseat of the pants, because the increase isrelatively small compared to my other mods.
About allyou can hear from the induction now is the faint noise that accompaniesthe squirt of fuel from the accel pump...

Did you note any performance gain on your short trip?
