Is an aftermarket air filter really worth it?

I went with the UNI, i have one on the KLX and the KLR. Great filters, I believe K&N's would let small particles through, if you ride in real dusty dirty conditions. The 2 stage foam i believe work better for off road conditions.

I would not worry about rain with a properly oiled air filter, well foam air filter, i have seen water just shed right off of it, i have actually sprayed out my air box with the air filter installed. Rain would be no problem with how the air box is under the seat. In my experience riding through water, which i love to do, if you get into deep enough water the back tire kicks up a massive amount of water that goes around the inner rear fender and right into the airbox. I have confirmed it over and over... lol...

Yes a filter makes a difference. I put a 20 buck UNI filter and got better responce than a 500 buck header and tailpipe.
I run the lid off, 4 degrees off the equator, it buckets down here with rain, no issues.
The airbox on my EFI has a drain with clear plastic bottle attached to catch oil/water. So far nothing.

My two cents....the important thing is to keep the air filter clean and doing its job. Some guys get a K&N and never touch it again after the install. Bad....

To Binsac. The K&N will work if cleaned and oiled but it WILL NOT FLOW MORE AIR UNLESS IT IS PROPERLY CLEANED AND OILED! Everybody OVER OILS their filters. Get it really clean. 409 & dish soap. Get it really dry. Stood vertically (so the water drains) and in the sun for 3-4 hrs. SPRAY K&N oil on it LIGHTLY, so there are some unsprayed areas. Stand it back up in the sun and let capillary action do it's work. LIGHTLY touch any un-oiled spots. Return to sun. That's it. EVERYBODY OVER OILS K&N FILTERS. By the way, what I just told you is what K&N wants you to do. It only took me about 25 years to get around to reading the directions.

Fortunately I haven't yet needed to wash or oil mine. I do very little dirt riding and it's pretty clean. I think you bring up a good point and that is people do tend to over oil their filters. I'll be sure to hit it with a light spray when I do it.

Truely not picking here but want to point this out i am digging through to catch up on older info and finding a lot of it. It would help all of us if we state a part # as being a supplier part # or a manufacturer's part #. I was looking for a uni part of 30-743 while all along it was a dennis kirk #. It's all good- just helps define things for better point and shoot.
