2018 250 barkbuster challenges

Just got a 2018 KLX 250 and got a set of Enduro Engineering barkbusters. To my surprise when I removed the throttle tube the end of the handlebar has an extra sleeve welded into it for reinforcement. This meant that the included hardware wouldn't work. BTW, I have installed probably 15 sets of these barkbusters in the past and am very familiar with the design. At this point I didn't want to change bars so I decided to use a tap (M8 x 1.25) and tap the end of the sleeve to use the bolts that came in the hardware package. Very delicate process but it worked and got them installed. So FYI, be warned and prepared on the new 2018 model KLX 250. Not a 10 minute job as I thought it was going to be.

They did that on earlier models also. They also have holes drilled in the bars to locate the controls. You will need to trim the pins on controls if or when you change the bars.

Yep. I have lots to learn from others and the past. Thanks for the input.

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.kaw...a6d3d0187.jpegSturdy simple mounting beats the fanagling I had to do with the expensive cycra hand guards on my klx. You can tell it’s a girls bike lol.
Interesting how many manufacturers there are for ‘bark buster’ hand guards. I have Cycra hand guards on the klx, looking into Highway Dirt Bikes hand guards for my bike.
They sure cost a lot more than what I’d think but it’s funny the girl bought cheapie Tusk D flex hand guards. They went on simply and seem bionic. Super basic design. Making me rethink if I really need all the bells n whistles after all.

Very nice. BTW, what year is your KLX? I prefer the headlight visor and black side panels over the white on the 2018. I guess I can order those from Kawasaki for a small fortune. I have been spoiled in the past being able to buy aftermarket plastics for the Hondas and KTM and not using the expensive OEM pieces. I'm surprised they are not available aftermarket with tons of these bikes sold all over the world.

it’s a 2012, partzilla has the radiator shrouds $55. each. I changed my klx over to all black plastic, I concur it’s not cheap but it bolts on correctly unlike some Acerbis or maier plastic I used on other bikes

Nice. Will the black side cover panels from the 2012 model bolt right up on the 2018 model? If so I will order them from Kawi unless Partzilla has them. Thanks.

The plastics from ‘09-14 klx250s will fit your ‘18 klx. I ordered black plastic for mine when the black was offered. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.kaw...489c33a4e.jpeg

Took the OEM barkbusters off my Kawasaki Versys and installed them on the KLX 250 and they fit great. Not happy about the $190 price but they work great and look nice on the bike.

Hey all!

This is my first post... Here goes.

I ran into this exact problem after trying to fit my MSR guards onto my bike. I ended up tapping the weights at the end of the bars, and it took some adjustments to get it all to fit. I had to adjust the front brake fluid cable and rotate it slightly, and also move the clutch about a quarter inch or so inward towards the center of the bars. The throttle control box unfortunately has that plastic guide that fits into a drilled hole in the bars that S10GTO was talking about. This in conjunction with the front brake fluid, made moving the brake lever so it could fit in the barkbuster complicated. Mine is still within protection of the buster but I need to mess with it a little and see if I can match it up better.

The stock bolts that came with the barkbusters were 8mm. It was actually pretty easy drilling and tapping this size of a bolt in the provided hole that the weight already had. Dewalt sells single packs of Drill bit and tap sets that ran me around 8 bucks for the 8mm here in the US. I ended up having to purchase shorter stainless bolts about 1.25 inches in length due to the tap only being 1.25 inches in length. The weights in the bars seem to be around 2 inches long.
