2010 KLX250SF - 21 mpg

Hi all.

Last October I bought a 2010 KLX250SF. Just 615 km on it, but it had been sitting for a while. Maybe a year. As far I know its stock.

Before the winter, I took it to a mechanic that adjusted the idle and changed the oil. He said it was in great shape.

Over the winter I tried to run it occasionally, but it had some cold start issues when the temperature was around freezing. Still, I filled it with 94 octane and got it running a few times.

I started riding it this spring, and it just hit 670 km - and ran out of gas. That's 55 km of driving on the main tank, or 6-8 l litres. So about 20-25 mpg.

TLDR:
- 2010 KLX250SF with 700 km (450 miles)
- 20-25 mpg
- wtf

Questions:

1) Where to start? This bike is supposed to get 60+mpg.
2) Should I be running 94? It was my brother's advice.

Thanks everyone!

Matt

Do a check over several tanks of fuel. Try to have the bike sitting the same way at each fill. Fill to the same level each time. Report back in a few weeks.
This check was too short and included too much idling.

I got as high as 100mpg(Imperial) during break-in (following the owners manual)

Kawi says 87 is fine. It's worked in my '09 but I'll be switching to whatever grade I have to move up to in order to avoid ethanol.

Look for a fuel leak also as even poorly jetted it should do better.

Agree with these posts above ^.

Put a few more tanks through it at report back. Leaks or jetting would be the first places to look if that poor mileage continues. Is the exhaust pipe all sooty?
