2006 old cold weather cold starts…
Hey everyone, considering driving quite far to buy a 2006 klx250s talked to the owner last night and the only thing that concerns me is that the bike has not been ridden much lately. The guy said he hasn’t changed the oil in a couple years because he hasn’t rode it much, is that and issue? Also he said in colder weather the choke often has to be left on for 5 or so minutes before the biker run. It’s a one owner bike with just over 3,000miles. Looks to be in amazing shape, no rust anywhere, all stock. Is this a bike still worth investing in and does the oil or carb/choke thing I mentioned raise any concerns?

Definitely drain the carb at the least. Old oil with 3000 miles isn't any worry, but definitely would be worth changing just because. For initial start up before buying, no big teal though. When it comes to starting, especially in cold, all KLX250s with carburetors were horrendously lean and needed rejetting. My brother's 2006 did and my 2009 did. Otherwise it would crank over for 10-20 seconds before firing when cold and would require choke for several minutes to be able to be ridden. With jetting my bike fired up nearly instantly in 3°F weather and in summer the choke not only would be off in less than 30 seconds, but sometimes not even needed. I'd be riding almost instantly. I have a link in my signature that will detail the jetting, but going directly to D. Pippin's page gets you to a treasure trove of information. click here Definitely check out the carb mods.
Only thing that ever seems to cause issues for some is when the cam chain tensioner quits working right, and I make the manual tensioner to fix it permanently. Otherwise the bikes are darn near bullet proof.
