Sadly, when I tore my transmission apart it was obvious that the spline pattern on the transmission shafts are different between the 300R gears I found, and my stock 250S transmission shafts.
KLX300R sixth gear on top, KLX250S sixth gear on bottom. Note the different splines
I was hoping that you saw my original reply about needing the whole transmission, input and output shafts, not just the gears themselves. If you still want to do the swap I can send you a complete 06-07 transmission that has the better 6th gear for reduced rpm? Let me know If you are interested
I greatly appreciate that, and I did see your post. I thought you were referring to the KL250 Super Sherpa transmission swap needing all the gears and shafts.
I appreciate the offer, but it’s all back together and in the frame. If I ever tear it back apart again, I’ll grab a super Sherpa transmission to swap into it.
Well that is fair enough, I did sort of word it like something someone might do for relaxation on a calm Sunday afternoon. I understand these bikes are quite reliable so luckily bottom end issues are rare when they do arise.
But since I am installing a new crank and splitting the cases isn’t optional you can probably relate to making any and all possible upgrades while I’m “in the mess” so to speak.
I actually sourced a set of 19/21 gears this evening and will give it a try, if it doesn’t work at least we’ll know for the next guy!
Lastly, I don’t make it a point to shift at redline every time, I’m actually a pretty conservative rider I feel. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy revving the little motor out and sliding around in the dirt!
Thanks for the reply, I’ll post up my findings when I get her all torn down.
I admire your pioneer spirit and your willingness to take a risk to find out.
I run 14/37 road gears on my SM (50mph @ 5,000 rpm) which is perfect for my uses.

Ha! That’s very eloquent and generous of you to say. Even though we’ve never met, you can trust me when I say, you don’t get to looking like I look from being smart. Furthermore, when I play dumb around others, no one ever questions me. So pioneer spirit, or just plain looney? I don’t know, I enjoy piddling and optimizing my equipment to suit my needs. If I can help someone else along the way that’s just icing on the cake!
🤣
So yeah, I’m usually willing to seek out info and dig to find answers where I can! Many on here have done so before me and that insight is what makes any forum such a great asset to the community!!
👍👍
For reference I run the factory 14/42 and it suits me well. I’ll grab another mount from the stable if I want to do a day long superslab ride. I’m very comfortable with that gearing on the current Trakmasters or my other go to, the stock D605.

You need the 2001 - 2007 300R gears as they have the same spline as the 250S, The older 300R like my 98 has the six spline, So you can get just the 6th gear set for a 2006-2007 250S or the 300R will work.

Would've been good to know beforehand! I’m not looking back as the bike has several thousand trouble free miles on it since! I hope this build lasts for decades so this info won’t be needed for awhile! Thanks for the data just the same!
Sorry for the dumb question, but I was thinking that this thread says that a 6th gear set from a '06-07 KLX250 could be used in a '09 KLX250. But looking at the microfiche, the '09 KLX250 uses 13-spline shafts/gears, whereas the '06-07 KLX250 implies a 6-spline setup. So then I went to the microfiche for a '01-07 300R, supposedly having 13 splines, yet the microfiche looks like 6 spline as well. What did I miss? I can't find any 13- spline gearsets that I could use in my '09.
Thanks in advance.

It’s my understanding that the whole transmission and the appropriately splined shafts would have to be swapped to the 09’ and newer models as they do have different spline counts as you noted. The gears themselves were not swappable in my case.

I have an 06-07 klx250 complete transmission that I removed in good condition when I swapped in the Super Sherpa transmission. I can take some pictures of it and post them here. When you are asking about the splines, you are talking about where the counter shaft sprocket for the drive chain attaches correct?

No, I'm talking about the internal spline that drives the gear itself. Look at post # 11, note how the '09 has 13 splines on the inside, and I was hoping to chase down simply two gears and pull mine off, slide them on.
