10k mark maintenance??

so i hit 10,000 miles not to long ago and i have a couple questions.. i believe im not the only person who has a rattling timing chain or whatever, it started at about 5000 miles and would only rattle at 5-6000 rpm's now at 10,000 it rattles at all rpm's or is it my valves? if its the chain in the engine i dont think im to worried about it.. any input? thanks fella's =)

My chain no rattle, same mileage.....mostly wot sugar in low gear.....shims a couple times thou.

I don't think the lil klx has enough azzzz to stretch the timing chain ... but lets hear bout that.

I don't think the cam chain wear is consistent between bikes. Probably depends on how your particular tensioner is working. I did a 300 kit on mine last month with 11000 miles on the bike, and my chain was fairly worn out. My biked made that annoying knack-knack sound, and it was all because of the cam chain. The cam sprocket, chain guides, and crank gear were in excellent shape, but the chain was sacked. I installed a new chain and insured my tensioner was extended at the appropriate point, and the bike has been totally quiet. I'm going to treat the tensioner like a manual tensioner and insure that it has extended properly. I might also get a Krieger manual tensioner. I don't think there's anything wrong with the chain or the overall design, but the tensioner doesn't inspire me.

lol.....it means I'm hitting the rev limiter a lot in second and third with a lot of miles and my cam chain is fine...even thou I beat the snot out of my lil klx trying to float on sugar sand.... but I have had to replace my valve shims a couple times cause I wore them down. Does that help you....perhaps, perhaps not :D

I still don't think the lil klx motor can stretch a cam chain, sayin.

check the valves if youy havent lately, chance the oil anc clean the air filter, check chain and sprokets for wear. oh and do a few phat wheelies to lube the exhaust bearings and bounce it off the rev limiter to check the blinker fluid.

A rattling cam chain seems to be a common problem for the KLX. Mine uses to do it, until I replaced it and it has been quite since.

alright sounds good guys, how hard is it to replace the cam chain?

Kawi, other than the normal deal of having to remove the cams, you have to remove the RH engine cover, the clutch basket, the primary gear, and the oil pump. That sounds rather daunting, but it went easier than doing the 300 cylinder and piston...which wasn't difficult either.
