Question 06 KLX250S Oil

Quick question,

I need to change my oil on my (new to me) 06' KLX250S and need to verify what type and weight will work for my area/temps. I'd like to run Synthetic if possible.

the manual shows:

SA or SF class

SAE 10W-40, 10W-50, 20W-40, 20W-50

1.5L when engine is completely dry (How many quarts is that?)

I live in NM, the summers are 90-105 degrees, winters are 15-50 degrees so which weight and possibly brand do you guys recommend??

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Amsoil has a good motorcycle oil (real synthetic) in a 10w-40 that seems to work good for me......

Yes, Amsoil 10W40 synthetic motorcycle oil is all I use. I have 10,300 miles to date and change each 1000 miles when commuting.

I've heard some of you guys use synthetic but when I went to get my first oil change the dealer I use did not recommend synthetic. He said the reason was because the transmission uses the same oil.

First is that true? Second what is the mechanical reason for not using it or using it?

That is complete B/S and poor advice. I'd be questioning anything else the dealer told me from here on because they couldnt be more wrong. It might not be appropriate for the FIRST oil changed but that would be based soley on the milage. I'd run maybe the first 1000 miles on traditional oil then switch over to synthetic. I did exactly that and havent looked back. I have over 10,000 miles on my 06 KLX250s so far. I did the same with my 2001 Ninja 250 and it had 38,000 miles on the original clutch when I sold it. Amsoil 10W40 motorcycle synthetic motor oil.

Yeah I dont like that dealer but I'm nervous about working on my bike by myself. I think I will start changing my own oil. Regular oil changes were $65.

1.5L = 1.58503qt (so I put in just a little over 1.5 quarts)

I use Mobil 1 (4T Racing) in 10-40 because it's available close by. Supposedly, there's a small Amzoil shop on Lomas near UNM. Maybe today would be a good time for me to go find it. Changing to synthetic was one of the best "mods" I did to my bike. The wet clutch absolutely loves the stuff. No more "missed" shifts, no more "hard" shifts.

I just use Valvoline 10w-40. From my experiences, it doesn't really matter what brand or whether it's organic or synthetic, as long as you change it frequently (especially on dirtbikes). Look how many old 70's and 80's motorcycles are still on the streets and running today that have been running standard oil, before the whole synthetic oil craze took off.
