"Horsepower" . . . . What Does it Really Mean?

Deep down you gotta be somewhat disappointed.
Deep down you gotta be somewhat disappointed.
BTW, I think once Tony gets his carb dialed in, it will easily make up that 0.5 hp on scat and both bikes will be on similar ground. Even so, Tony's torque reading is higher already. I have nothing against the Big Gun pipe, but this must be a real blow to you who has been spouting how much better the Big Gun is than any other pipe out there especially Muzzy and that your Big Gun easily gave your bike 10 HP more. What a load of BS you have been spreading about that. And now two fellas, one with a Muzzy, the other with a Big Gun, run their bikes one after the other on the same dyno on the same day and it doesn't show any significant difference between the Muzzy and Big Gun ... hmmm. And all those times you saying, "Trust me on this" ... referring to the Big Gun and how much better it is than anything else. All I can say is THANK YOU a16tony and scat for running your dyno tests side by side and having the ***** to publish the results, good or bad.
And yes, my dyno results were somewhat pessimized I know - that's old news. But conveniently ignored the smiley at the end of that sentence where I commented on my "paltry" dyno results - that was just a friendly poke at a16tony and scat. I know that you can't really compare two dyno runs from two seperate dyno machines, and believe me I'm NOT holding up my results as some mark to beat. And I would not be offended if the results went the other way and they had a little jab at me. In fact, I'm fully expecting Marty or tremor38 or sullydirt or any one of a number of folks to show up with a dyno print-out any day now that will do just that. It's all in good fun, at least for most of us.
And most of all, you ignored the entire last paragraph of what I wrote which was my bike is just fine and I'm perfectly happy with it. I'll go on to say that I'd do every single mod again. For me, the mods were necessary to get the bike to the level of performance that I want. No one said we're out competing in this year's Supercross - but I do like a little snap and get-up on the trails. I guess some like a little more than others - what's the harm in that? In hindsight, the only mod I would skip is be the 300cc - I'd go straight to 331cc. But you see, I didn't have the benefit of someone elses experience so I didn't know until I tried it. But I still ended up at the same place. Skipping the 300cc would have saved me a few bucks is all. But hey, you do the best with the knowledge you have at the time. If it cost an extra hundred or two to be where I'm at now, then so be it - it was totally worth it.

man you and deej make up some ridiculous topics. they never amount to anything but ludicrous generalizations and off the wall claims of some type of number pertaining to our bikes. not to mention some story that seems like it goes on and on of which doesn't pertain to anything about this forum.

LOL.
Funny, you should bring up making ludicrous generalizations and off the wall claims!
Tell me more about your 5HP+ Big Gun, please! Im listening...
Seems like Iowaguy is off topic quite a bit himself but I never heard anybody complain about that in his posts.
You know the ones, how my life sucks and I am going to try to make yours suck too. I guess I'm off topic too.[sm=guilty.gif]

Contrary to the comment suggesting that this Horsepower vs. Torque topic is “ridiculous,†I think it’s fascinating. It is also helpful to the rest of us who want to know what, if any difference certain mods make. Not unlike using scales to measure our weight loss or gain during a fitness program, the dyno can help us measure units of change for comparative purposes. That’s why we do it. It’s different than the “Butt Dyno,†but (no pun intended) it’s a bit less subjective.
That said, I would like to make a clarification that might be helpful.
Torque was accurately stated as a measure of force applied.
Horsepower, however, is derived from torque applied, with the additional factor of motion and time. Torque can be measured without anything being done, i.e. measuring force applied on a bolt. In this case, torque is measured even when there is no motion. Horsepower is in fact a measurement of work done. This requires movement. Even with their phenomenal torque, there is a good reason why they don’t typically put Cummins diesel engines in dragsters. Here is a great article explaining the difference.

I sense that I’m not telling some of you anything new, but if this helps anyone better understand the age old confusion between torque and horsepower, then it’s been worth the effort.
I would also like to comment on the typical nature, “Good natured “nature†of most of the posts. When anyone says theirs is bigger, faster or in any way better’n mine, well, them’s often fight’n words. Not here. You guys do a great service to us all with your light hearted banter, opinions and seat of the pants product reviews.
Keep up the good work. Come spring, we’ll all have well prepared mounts…or we’ll know the reason why.

It would have been very disappointing if Iowaguy did not reply to this post. You see I kinda missed his feeble attempt to sound important and intellectual while maintaining his sense of humor. I thinks he's very funny in a dark way, You guys just don't understand him. He will push your buttons until you go mad, and he enjoys that. He happens to own the very best butt dyno around too.
tHE GRINCH comes to mind cause he can't stand when people have fun.... LOL
In reality he is just trying to protect you from yourself.
How do I know, we hang out see pic

Hiding behind a computer is not as bad as you think. Saves on medical and dentist bills. Try it you will be amazed how good it feels.
I really get a kick out of his posts.
PS I have a big gun and my bike friggin rocks.... Plus I can wheelie in third gear too...

Ah, but this forum doesn't exist because one person nor does it revolve around your personal opinion of what is 'ridiculous' or not. IMHO, your posts have contributed absolutely zero information of value, unless the reader worked for Big Gun. Instead, you see fit to come here and rip what others are posting or try to be a judge of what is worthwhile or pertinent. You're like the yappy little lap dog that jumps around on the porch barking at German Shepards, but won't evem step one foot away from the door.
If you have something of value, contribute. Otherwise, just get over yourself. Believe or not, a little bit of humor, camradery or just the mention of a somewhat related subject that keeps others reading is part of what sustains a forum.
Take chill pill. Slap a muzzle on it or come of the porch and participate in a meaningful way.

ok, to add some type of reply to this aforestated ridiculous topic- after just reading nobrakes' reply and seeing that he, after all the high dollar mods and mucho $ carb changeout he has done, only has a 1 horsepower advantage over Tony's big gun equipped stock CVK carb equipped bike is really eye opening. What does that mean? Well, to me either the BG itself makes huge horsepower or the pumper carb doesn't really matter much. I'd hate to think I spent all that time and money on 1 horsepower. You may think this is a cheap jab at you nobrakes but it really isn't. I just think that some haven't really compared the two. It gives me something to think about as I was planning on going pumper next spring, but I may just do the 300 conv. for a wee bit more torque and stop there. I'm not sailing off triples so instant snappiness isn't something I need as my setup does me just fine. But jeez, 1 horse. Deep down you gotta be somewhat disappointed.

ahhhh forgetaboutit ... Iowaguy is a little peckerhead w/ears and nothing else. Hasn't he admitted to being something like 5'5 and 120lbs? Jeez, I've got chunks in my poop bigger than that guy.

On another note I don't know if you read the Maytown Muckfest report but I hit a mud rut made by a 44" super swamper at about 40 almost dislocating my left shoulder. I think I might have a hairline fracture in my collarbone cause three weeks later and I still can't lift my arm over my head.....
Still, Seasons greetings to all............. Be Happy and Be Safe
