DS tires
Hey, I am needing some tires for my 650, I hang out in the 250 forum. I did a search and did not come up with much.
I am thinking a 50/50 tire that will work in fireroads/gravel & still be capable of 90mph on the hywy without too many worries. Most of my riding is errands on pavement, but I would like to get something more gravel road capable. What is everyone using here that would meet this criteria? |
Maybe you're already looking at them too, but there are some great other KLR650 forums and threads. ADV & .net come to mind. Have you looked at them?

Dunlop 606 @ 90 mph? Let me know how that works?
I'll check out those other forums, thanks. |
I'm not so sure about a 50/50 tire that you want to spend many miles at 90 on. YRMV. Are you sure you're not looking for something like an 80/20.
Here are a couple I follow: KLR650 Only Thread...... - ADVrider KLR 650 Modifications - ADVrider You're likely to also find some good tire-specific threads on ADV that are not KLR specific. and here's the .net KLR650.NET - Your Kawasaki KLR650 Resource! KLR650 Forums, KLR Forum Community For Technical Help |
Who wants to go 90 on a KLK anyway?
|
Hey thanks for the tips, I'll checked out the links. I actually do not have a KLR, but it is a 650 & I am a member of this forum.... so it was easy going here. My 650 will do 90, I don't know about yours, hehe.
Why? Because it can? |
OK, I looked at the other forums, then looked at the tires. I have Metzeler Tourance tires on the bike now, they look 95 R/5 D.
I am thinking more like a 75-road/25-dirt tire.....and the winner is..... Shinko 705's Q rated (99mph) Any bad news or comments welcome? |
I just took a 17 mile test ride on a new 2012 KLR650. I got it up to 90mph and the front end wasn't happy about it. Keep it under 80mph.

Personally I've run Duro Median HF903/904 dual sport tires in all kinds of conditions, with a lot of both pavement and gravel on my KLX650. They stick like a good road tire on pavement, clean out fairly well when in mud and work great in general. I get about 4000 miles on them before the rear is low enough on tread to spin too much (not bald). The pair sells for less than $120 last time I got them. I do both at once, because the front is cupped enough I dump it too. Great tires, I've used them for over 30,000 miles now here in eastern Ohio both on back dirt/gravel roads and playing supermoto on the paved ones.
