06 KLR 650 speedometer/tachometer quit

I recently purchased my KLR about 4 months ago. The other day as I was riding home from work I looked down and noticed my speedometer had quit working. Then I noticed the tachometer had quit as well. My RPM meter was working fine though so I don't think its electrical. New rider and would appreciate any help. Thanks.

What year is your KLR? Are these digital or analog meters?

Usually tachometer measures RPM. I'm not following that problem.

It's an 2006. Not digital. It has an RPM meter by itself on the left then the speedometer with mileage under it on the right.

Okay, I have an '06 so can help you a little bit.

Regarding the speedo, there are two places where it commonly breaks. First, the cable itself could have broke. Second, in the hub of the front wheel are some tabs that fit into the speedo driver gear. If the front wheel is installed incorrectly, without aligning the tabs correctly, something in there will wear/break. I would first disconnect the cable from one or both ends to check for a broken cable. Maybe at the hub first and see if there is part that will stick out that you can spin by hand to see if the speedo needle moves. If the cable isn't broke and the indicator moves, that also shows that the speedo unit itself likely isn't the culprit. I'd then go pulling the wheel and look at the hub and tabs. I think its possible, but unlikely, that the problem is in the dash's speedo unit, so I'd start with the cable and hub first.

So, back to the RPM meter/tachometer. Is this broke too, or working properly? When you said tachometer, did you mean odometer (the total number of miles)?

Yea my bad. I meant odometer.

Any luck yet?

Alright. I finally got around to checking some things out. I disconnected the tachometer cable down by the wheel and tried spinning it. The needle on the speedometer never moved. I've ordered a new cable and I'll see what happens with that installed. Thanks for all the help so far.

Lol I think you mean speedo cable not tachometer. Most likely the cable it needs lubricating from time to time, the hub as well. While you are waiting for the speedo cable I suggest you pull the wheels off check and lube the wheel bearings, lube the speedo hub and lube suspension bearings and joints. Oh yeah steering head and swingarm bearing too. All of these are pretty much dry from the factory and if they have never been done, well you have a broken cable to show what happens.
P.S. lube clutch and throttle cables too.

Lol. Maybe one of these times i'll actually sound like I kinda know what i'm talking about.
