old KDX or newer KTM 2-stroke
I have the desire for a light easy handling off-road dirt bike. I'm more of an Enduro/Dual-Sport rider so no MotoCrossers for me.
I am interested in a lower purchase price, ease of maintenance (I want to ride not wrench), and something not too challenging (I'm an older pleasure rider not a competitive rider or show off).
My KLX-250S suspension sucks. It is fine for the road but, off-road it SUCKS. While not overly hard to keep running, it is a pain to work on with tight access to most things.
Is the KDX-220/200 a good option for me? Are parts getting hard to get due to age? I assume cost is modest considering the pedigree and age. How good (or bad) is the suspension? Is it easy handling and lightweight on the trail?
How does it compare to a used KTM 2-smoke? I'm looking for a 200 or 250 KTM in the pre-2010 date range and expect to pay a bit more than I would for a similar condition KDX. Does the KTM warrant the higher price? Are parts more expensive or harder to find? Is an easy bike to ride if the sag is set so I don't need a ladder to mount it?
TIA,
Sid

what you want is somewhat between the two.
the KTM is not as comfy on your rear end for long trail rides. but KTM is of higher quality parts. I didn't like having to change the rear suspension linkage bearings every year on my KDX200. Parts aren't hard to find though. Also two power valves on the KDX need to be replaced every 6 months. And if you don't keep the tranny level a bit higher than recommended then the far end clutch shaft bearing self destructs. and the stock pipe and rear shock are crap. and it was heavier than it should be. I think the best trail bike is the Gas-Gas 200 or 300.
