Couple rules: (1) nuts on gears usually come off in the opposite direction that the gear turns, being aware that some gear nuts have an invisible locking pin (like a cotter key without the ends) (2) try applying a release agent like liquid wrench (3) all else fails, heat the nut with a small torch. Then, lock the gear with a wooden block to prevent turning and apply preasure. Hope this helps
