2002 Mule 3010 Flooding Issues
I am sorry if this is not in the correct section. Please move if it isn't.
I have been searching the forums for a couple weeks now and can't seem to come to a conclusion to the problems with a mule that I have been working on. Here is the back story - this Mule has been used on my uncles farm since around 2003 with few issues other than running low on oil and spinning a bearing. A new engine was put in it along with a new carb and some other parts around 2015. It ran great until around 2020 and that is when the issues started. So here are my issues - The original issue was a rough idle and hard starting and the got worse. Started flooding out the engine with fuel and fouling the plugs out so I would get a no start condition. The carb was cleaned and a refresh kit was put in along with new plugs. Those things didn't help my issues much at all. I could start the mule again but still rough idle and flooding issue. I found out my fuel pump was only working intermittently. This was the original fuel pump from 2002 so we decided it was probably a good idea to throw a new pump on there so we did that, it didn't fix our intermittent fuel pump so a new fuel relay was purchased and installed because we were just desperate at this point and started throwing parts at it. It sat from around the end of 2020 until around a month ago. Got it out and started tinkering with it again. Cleaned the carb again with carb cleaner and compressed air, put the cleaned original jets back in the carb, Hard wired the fuel pump to a switch to temporarily fix the intermittent power issue I was having. Fuel pump primed right up and shut off like it was supposed to. I put another new set of plugs in it. It fired right up and got the idle set. It set there and idled for probably 10 to 15 minutes with no issues at all. Shut it off and immediately started it back up and it fired up again with no issue so I shut it back off except this time I noticed the fuel pump kept pumping every 3-5 seconds or so. I tried to start it again and it wouldn't start. Pulled the plugs and both were drenched with fuel. I cleaned them up, tried to start it again and still couldn't get it to start. Pulled the carb, cleaned the needle and needle seat but no dirt or debris was found. Got everything back installed, and still wouldn't start and it was flooded out again. So I decided to check the ignition coils and pickup coil and all tested within Kawi spec. So I re-installed the coils again and decided I would try and start it and to my surprise it fired right up. Let it idle for a while and after about 5 minutes it started missing and rough idle again and then shut off. Pulled the plugs again and they soaking wet with fuel. Cleaned them up and re-installed. tried to start it again but still no luck so I shut the fuel pump off, tried cranking for a while to clear out the flood and it started and idled until it ran out of fuel in the carb, flipped the fuel pump back on and tried to start and it instantly flooded out again so I shut the fuel pump off cranked it over until it fired again and this time while it was idling I flipped the fuel pump back on and it killed it almost instantly. So I turned the fuel pump back off and cranked it over until it started and this time would just flip the fuel pump on and off to keep it idling and this somewhat worked to keep it idling but, still was flooding it out because there was quite a bit of white smoke coming out. So at this point I decided to try to fix the initial problem with my fuel pump wiring and found a loose wire connection to one of the butt connectors. Got that fixed and now the fuel pump was working on the stock wiring again but was still was flooding out the engine while trying to start it. So I found a couple people on this forum that had some what similar issues and they replaced Igniter box so I tried that and it did not help my issues either. I have done a compression test and both cylinders were at around 90PSI. Tested the fuel pump and it was sitting at around 2.5PSI. I've cleaned out the fuel tank, blew out all the line with compressed air, new fuel filter, have tried both the original carb and the newer carb that came with new engine, cleaned both carbs probably 20 times between the two of them, tried 2 fuel pumps, new igniter, 2 sets of plugs, and new fuel. I just literally can't think of anything else to check. I feel like it is a carb or fuel pump issue but, it is just odd that I have two carbs and two fuel pumps and no matter what combination they all do the same thing. Sorry for being so long winded, I am just desperate at this point. I've spent probably close to 40 hours on this thing at this point and still can't come up with an answer as to why it will run good one minute and then the next start flooding out. |
Possible solution to flooding
The solution I found to the flooding was a plugged carb vent line. Where the line terminates in the frame the metal tube was plugged. I am assuming this plugged vent prevented the float from seating. Hope this helps.
